Commission approves new oil bids for Ohio state lands

The Oil and Gas Land Management Commission recently selected the winning bids to lease mineral rights under select Ohio DNR (ODNR) and Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) properties. Under Ohio law, the commission was required to select the “highest and best bid.”
On July 10, the commission posted the nominated leasing parcels for bid. August 9 was the deadline to submit bids. Following the submissions, the commission members reviewed the bids to determine the highest and best bids.

Unique ice-fishing image captures Ohio Division of Wildlife’s photo contest title

The Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife featured some of the best wildlife photography and art at the Ohio State Fair.
The Division of Wildlife’s annual photo contest produced a winning image depicting an ice fishing scene from a unique vantage point. More than 600 photos were submitted by talented photographers across Ohio. Six category winners were also chosen.

Iowa’s rabbit, squirrel season opens Aug. 31

Iowa’s cottontail rabbit season begins Aug. 31 statewide. Iowa has an abundant rabbit population, with the southern half of the state seeing the best overall numbers. 
“It should be another good year for rabbit hunting not only for experienced hunters, but for young or novice hunters who can learn necessary skills with little competition,” said Todd Bogenschutz, upland wildlife research biologist for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). “Rabbits have been one of the most stable populations of our upland species we’ve had in the state.”

New Minnesota DNR license system coming in spring

The Minnesota DNR and Minnesota IT Services are working to modernize the state’s electronic license system with an external licensing vendor, PayIt Outdoors.
The electronic license system is the primary way the DNR issues angling and hunting licenses and permits to people who want to fish, hunt, or trap in Minnesota. It is also used to register and title watercraft and register outdoor recreational vehicles, including snowmobiles and off-highway vehicles.

Minnesota hunters asked not to shoot ear-tagged, radio-collared research bears

The Minnesota bear hunting season opens Sunday, Sept. 1, and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is once again asking hunters to avoid shooting marked research bears. These bears are marked with distinctively large, colorful ear tags and wear radio collars.
Researchers with the Minnesota DNR are monitoring 48 radio-collared black bears across the state, especially in bear hunting zones 27, 45, and parts of the no-quota zone.

Redwood Falls man is Minnesota DNR’s 2023 volunteer firearms safety instructor of the year

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has named Jerry Ludwig, of Redwood Falls, as the 2023 volunteer firearms safety instructor of the year.
Ludwig has been a volunteer instructor since the early 2000s, having certified more than 750 students in firearms safety. He’s a veteran shooting sports enthusiast who actively recruits new instructors, a shooting coach, and a volunteer who’s especially devoted to getting youth involved in the outdoors.
