Retired Michigan DNR leader receives national honor

Ron Olson, one of Michigan’s most passionate outdoor recreation and conservation advocates, earned another national accolade last month: the Honorable Cornelius Amory Pugsley Medal for Parks and Conservation.
Recently retired chief of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Parks and Recreation Division, Olson received the prestigious Pugsley Medal during the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration’s annual awards dinner.

Minnesota DNR completes seeding project by helicopter

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has completed an aerial seeding project via helicopter to disperse jack pine, white pine and black spruce seeds on DNR-managed forests across the state. The flights are part of the DNR’s typical fall reforestation work, which can also include activities like direct seeding and planting, bud capping, prescribed burns, and other site preparation.

Ohio’s deer archery season off and running in 2025; here’s what to know

Ohio has a long deer archery season that is open Saturday, Sept. 27, through Sunday, Feb. 1, 2026.
Hunters may use crossbows, compound bows, recurve bows, and longbows to pursue deer during the archery season. Deer are Ohio’s most sought-after wild game and an important food source for families across the Buckeye State, according to the ODNR Division of Wildlife.

Salvage harvests ongoing in Bemidji, Minn., blowdown area

Following the destructive June 20-21 blowdown event near Bemidji, the Minnesota DNR is employing salvage timber harvests to promote forest recovery, improve safety, bolster forest health, and reduce wildfire risk on DNR-managed sites, including in the Mississippi Headwaters State Forest and Lake Bemidji State Park.

Minnesota, federal agencies using wasps to slow emerald ash borer

This September, the Minnesota DNR, Minnesota Department of Agriculture, and the U.S. Forest Service will complete a joint biological control effort to slow the spread of emerald ash borer (an invasive beetle from Asia) in the Chippewa National Forest. The effort, known as the parasitoid wasp program, involves the release of three species of non-stinging wasps to target EAB at different life stages, helping slow EAB without harming other species.
