Hawkeye Wildlife Area near Swisher, Iowa, to host 12th Annual Pelican Festival

The public is invited to the 12th Annual Pelican Festival, Aug. 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Hawkeye Wildlife Area, near Swisher.
Programs begin at 12:30 p.m., and run every 30 minutes. Attendees can see a live peregrine falcon, learn about bats and bees and, of course, the American white pelican. Exhibitors from various outdoors associations, societies and clubs will be on hand with displays attendees can experience.

High quality trout stream, timber make Iowa’s Big Mill Creek Wildlife Area a popular destination

The parking lot at the northwest corner of Iowa’s Big Mill Creek Wildlife Area provides a good spot to people watch, or more precisely, vehicle watch. Cars and trucks and SUVs coming and going, up and down the access lane to Mill Creek, where drivers try their luck with the local trout population.
“The big draw for the area is the trout stream – it brings the most people here,” said Nick McClimon, wildlife technician for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Maquoketa Wildlife Unit at nearby Green Island.

Minnesota DNR announces Grand Rapids-area deer-hunting protocols for this fall

Deer hunters participating in the Grand Rapids city deer hunt and in the broader Deer Permit Area 679 should be aware of and plan for changes in harvest and hunting regulations this fall.
The annual city of Grand Rapids special deer hunt begins with the start of archery season Sept. 16, continues through rifle and muzzleloader seasons, and ends on Sunday, Dec. 31. New this year, all deer 1 year or older harvested throughout the city’s special deer hunt are subject to mandatory chronic wasting disease sampling.

Ohio DNR offering scenic river controlled deer hunts

The Ohio DNR (ODNR), Division of Natural Areas and Preserves is holding special archery deer hunts at nine locations bordering the Stillwater State Scenic, Little Miami State and National Scenic, and the Big and Little Darby State and National Scenic rivers. These sites offer excellent hunting conditions while reducing the impact of deer browsing on native plant populations, according to ODNR.
Hunters must attend a mandatory meeting for each scenic river in which they would like to hunt. During each meeting, hunters will have an opportunity to purchase a $5 ticket to be entered into the scenic river area’s special hunt drawing.

Iowa’s Big Creek Wildlife Area offers an outdoor getaway near Des Moines

Often overlooked for its similarly named state park or mistaken for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sprawling Saylorville Wildlife Area, Big Creek Wildlife Area is a roughly 3,100-acre, one stop outdoor shop just 10 minutes from Ankeny.
It features remnant and reconstructed prairie, mature hardwood forest, small sediment basins for remote, hike-in fishing, and huge blocks of contiguous forest with no roads or lanes to break it up.

Invasive aquatic plants confirmed at Iowa’s West Okoboji Lake

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently discovered Eurasian watermilfoil growing throughout the canals near Miller’s Bay and The Harbor canals on West Okoboji Lake in Dickinson County. Brittle naiad was also found in the Triboji lagoon. No Eurasian watermilfoil or brittle naiad was found in the main lake of West Okoboji or the other lakes in the Iowa Great Lakes chain.
