Dealers face challenges on day one as New York State Police background check system debuts on firearm, ammunition sales

Although it was initially uncertain if it would happen as scheduled, on Sept. 13 the New York State Police began processing background checks for firearm, shotgun, rifle, and ammunition transactions in New York. 
The new system, which replaces federal NICS checks, is part of the 2022 Concealed Carry Improvement Act legislation, which mandates the State Police to perform background checks on ammunition purchases. On it’s first day, at least, dealers and consumers alike found the new system to be challenging.

Thoughts on New York’s “blaze orange” law and reader-submitted hunting photos

We’re about to embark on our third hunting season where big game hunters in New York are required to wear a hat or upper body clothing item that is at least 50% hunter orange or pink. The change was implemented just before the 2021 hunting seasons, and at the same time when hunting hours were adjusted to include 30 minutes of legal shooting time at each end of the day.
Being primarily a Northern Zone hunter, for so long I seldom thought about orange. That was until a friend of mine was shot by his brother-in-law when they were hunting together in the Adirondacks. After that – and especially after conducting an interview with him about his ordeal – I changed my tune and began regularly wearing an orange hat.

New York Crossbow Coalition reorganizes following death of its founder

Crossbow enthusiasts in New York have some encouraging news heading into the fall hunting season. Recent developments include the reorganization of the New York Crossbow Coalition, following the passing earlier this year of its founder, Rick McDermott. 
Meanwhile, hunters with disabilities or injuries preventing them from pulling back a traditional or compound bow also have some encouraging news. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has determined that the Americans with Disabilities Act allows for a more relaxed special permit requirement.

Firearms industry braces for changes in New York as State Police take over background checks

As the New York State Police prepare to take on the roll of performing background checks for both firearms and ammunition purchases in New York, stakeholders at many levels are preparing for the change. In some cases, they are asking state leaders to hold off. 
In an Aug. 23 letter sent to Gov. Kathy Hochul, four New York members of the U.S. Congress – Elise Stefanik (NY-21), Brandon Williams (NY-22) Nick Langworthy (NY-23) and Claudia Tenney (NY-24) – suggested the governor delay the roll-out of the background checks, which potentially could begin Sept. 13.

Illinois hunters watching coyote legislation out of New York

A few months after a national group launched a campaign to ban coyote hunting contests in Illinois, lawmakers in another state have taken steps to make such events illegal.
The New York State Assembly recently passed legislation that primarily bans coyote hunting contests, which, like in Illinois, are popular in agricultural areas in that the state.

Confidence lacking in New York’s background check debut

There’s a great deal of skepticism over the Concealed Carry Improvement Act mandated firearms and ammunition background check system that’s about to roll out in the months ahead.
As I pointed out in this space a few years ago when DEC’s new licensing system came about, I spent nearly 30 years working for a media company and not once did our software conversions and migrations ever go smoothly. And I wouldn’t expect that here.
