Remember when you were a kid and your parents said if you didn’t clean your room they were going to do it for you? Deep down, you knew that as much as you wanted to put off the chore, the outcome would be much better if you did it yourself.
That’s the point I was making a few issues back when discussing the filling of antlerless deer tags. It’s also likely the case with DEC’s non-lead ammunition efforts, including the recent expansion of it’s study on the topic and accompanying hunter rebate program.

New York Department of Environmental Conservation takes non-lead ammo rebate statewide
Building on a previous incentive-based program to encourage hunters to use non-lead ammunition, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced the expansion of a rebate program and its ongoing study that focuses on the use of lead in hunting ammunition.
In 2022, DEC released the Minimizing Risks to Wildlife and People from Lead Hunting Ammunition report. They followed up prior to the 2023 hunting season with a rebate program in limited areas that allowed hunters who voluntarily purchased non-lead ammunition up to a $60 rebate.

Adrienne and I are getting used to camping in the rain. After nearly three decades of spending at least one weekend a month, and the occasional extended vacation, going on summer camping trips, we’ve resolved ourselves to the fact that somewhere along the way we’re going to get wet.

A long-anticipated 860-acre expansion of Moreau Lake State Park, in Saratoga County, N.Y., has come to fruition.
In July, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the opening of the Big Bend Preserve at the park which includes a 6-mile trail system that permeates the tract, and in places, parallels the Hudson River.

If I had my way, every sportsmen in New York thoroughly would read two publications… three actually. These would be the one you’re holding in your hands (or reading electronically), along with the state’s hunting, fishing and trapping regulations guides.

Bear harvest expected to be on par with previous seasons in New York
Bear hunters in New York taking to the woods this fall should expect things to be much like they’ve been the past two hunting seasons.
State wildlife officials, with few exceptions, expect the forthcoming bear seasons in both the Northern and Southern Zones to be on par with those of 2022 and 2023, and years immediately prior.
