For over four years now, stretching all the way back to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems like we’ve been consistently in an ammunition shortage in some form or another.

New York’s youth big game hunt coming up Oct. 12-14

New York hunters ages 12-15 will once again have the opportunity to go afield with a mentor during the state’s annual youth hunting weekend Oct. 12-14. The dates are Saturday through Monday of Columbus Day weekend.
Since it’s inception in 2014, the youth hunting weekend has become a staple among the fall hunting seasons, and pairs young hunters with a mentor.

When I began hunting in the late 1970s, sporting licenses and carcass tags were printed on durable, cardboard-like waterproof paper. And what is today New York’s Hunting and Trapping Regulations Guide was back then a large, foldable map. There were, in fact, separate maps for big game and small game hunting, as well as for fishing. 
As the new self-printed sporting license era begins, it’s a reminder of how times certainly have changed.

Sept. 28 a key date this year in New York sporting world

The last days of September and the early part of October are a time when so much happens in New York’s sporting world. And Sept. 28 is a key date.
The fourth Saturday in September, and in this case Sept. 28, is National Hunting and Fishing Day, an event created in the 1970s by the Nixon administration that is now championed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. With archery seasons approaching, I have had numerous recent inquiries on the street and from readers alike about the current crossbow situation in New York.
Many continue to ask if legislation had passed earlier this year allowing those over the age of 60 to use a crossbow during the archery season. As we previously reported, it was not brought to the floor. However, what can be built upon – at least for hunters with impairments – is the program DEC expanded upon last year called “Reasonable Accommodation To Use an Unmodified Crossbow During the Regular Bow Season.”

Northern New York deer herd in good shape with opener looming

Another mild winter for much of the region and perhaps some help from mast crop production has New York State Department of Environmental Conservation big game biologists optimistic for ample whitetail numbers as deer season kicks off in the Northern Zone.
The region’s early archery season begins Sept. 27. Come October, the Northern Zone’s crossbow, muzzleloading and regular seasons will get under way, respectively.
