PBA union clears the air on seizure of Peanut the squirrel after social media backlash sparks threats of violence
The union which represents the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Police has provided details and was calling for calm following social media backlash after ECOs seized a squirrel and raccoon from a man who was caring for the animals without a license.
The story of Peanut the squirrel made national headlines after ECOs on Oct. 30 seized the squirrel and a raccoon named Fred, from Nick Longo, of Pine City, in Chemung County. Longo had been caring for the squirrel at a self-established sanctuary since 2017.

There is a large waterfall near my home that is the namesake of the road I live on. Visible from the roadside, it’s not uncommon for passers-by to snap a photo or two. And when spring rains and snowmelt swell the brook, I can hear the falls from my home.
But right now when you pass by the falls, they are not even visible. That may change as just about the time we go to press with this issue some much needed rain is in the forecast for most of New York. That’s good news for the areas around Southeastern New York and New Jersey where wildfires have kept firefighters on their toes and even caused evacuations.

Mild weather greets New York’s Southern Zone opening day deer hunters
The opening weekend of New York’s Southern Zone rifle season was a comfortable one for hunters in the southern tier, with daytime temperatures both Saturday and Sunday hovering in the 50s, and even approaching 60 degrees in parts of the state.
That likely kept hunters in the field, resulting in a number of success stories, including several sent to New York Outdoor News.

Wildfire claims life of New York State Parks worker
The drought that is plaguing Southeastern New York and bordering states and contributing to wildfires has claimed the life of a New York State Parks employee.
New York, meanwhile, remained under a statewide burn ban, which at press time was to be in effect through Nov. 30. The ban was issued in early November as firefighting crews in both New York and New Jersey worked to contain what has become known as the Jenning’s Creek Wildfire.

I guess you could say my father was a “casual” deer hunter. As much as he liked hunting, he didn’t have time to take it too seriously. With seven mouths to feed – me being the youngest – Dad worked plenty of overtime at a local mill. Much of that overtime, or additional side-work, was on Saturdays, and several of those occurred during deer season.

Also previously noted in this space is how we receive photos of successful big game rifle hunters who are not wearing hunter orange or pink, including youth hunters. In many cases, it can be assumed it was being worn during the hunt while in others, it’s questionable if it was worn at all.

CWD Discovered in Captive Red Deer at Herkimer County Facility
At press time, the incident was still considered isolated. While not detected in wild deer in the area, state officials are taking measures to test local wild deer herds for the debilitat ing disease that is fatal to white-tailed deer, and are prepared for more extreme measures should they be deemed warranted.
