Mild weather greets New York’s Southern Zone opening day deer hunters

As rifle season winds down – closing in both New York's Northern and Southern zones Dec. 8 – hunters are hoping for some late-season rutting activity. They’ll have plenty of hunting opportunities, as much of New York will be open for the late muzzleloading seasons through mid-December. (Stock photo)

The opening weekend of New York’s Southern Zone rifle season was a comfortable one for hunters in the southern tier, with daytime temperatures both Saturday and Sunday hovering in the 50s, and even approaching 60 degrees in parts of the state.
That likely kept hunters in the field, resulting in a number of success stories, including several sent to New York Outdoor News.
