Hiker vanishes during trek to remote Adirondack peak

The search for an experienced hiker reported missing Nov. 30 continued for over a week in the Adirondacks following his disappearance. However, as conditions worsened, and after over 400 miles were covered in the search, New York State Forest Rangers transitioned the effort to a recovery mission. 
Around 11 p.m. on  Nov. 30, a Saturday, New York State Police were notified that Leo DuFour, age 22, of Vaudreuil, Quebec, had not returned home following a planned hike to Allen Mountain, near Newcomb in the Adirondack High Peaks region.

Dan Ladd: Retirement equity needed for New York outdoor law enforcement

This month, nine new Forest Rangers and 26 Environmental Conservation Officers will enter New York’s outdoor law enforcement workforce. It should be, and certainly could be, more. What is a total of 35 graduates from the two academies who started out in May and June, respectfully, as 58? Why the lack of retention early on or the lack of interest overall?
If you ask the PBA of New York State, the union that represents over 1,100 specialized state law enforcement officers which along with ECOs and Forest Rangers include NYS Park Police and SUNY Police, the problem is retirement equity.

Rain, snow bring relief to crews battling wildfires in New York after nearly 6,000 acres burn

The arrival of winter weather in the form of recent rain and snowstorms that blanketed much of New York on Nov. 21 and 28 (Thanksgiving Day) provided some much-needed relief to crews battling wildfires, primarily in Southeastern New York.
On Nov. 22, Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office announced that after 14 days, the Jennings Creek/Sterling Forest State Park wildfire on the New York border with New Jersey was fully contained.
