I raised my eyebrows when I read the recent Associated Press story about the death of two hunters in southwest Michigan. I remember the murders, which occurred at the Fulton State Game Area in Kalamazoo County. It sent shock waves through Michigan’s hunting community.

Randy Claramunt vows to turn challenges into opportunities as Michigan’s new fisheries chief

Beginning March 5, the Michigan DNR will have a new chief of the fisheries division.
Randy Claramunt, the DNR’s Lake Huron Basin coordinator, has been promoted to fisheries division chief. He replaces Jim Dexter, who is retiring at the end of April.

Michigan DNR considers electronic trap monitors for businesses responding to wildlife damage 

Acting DNR Director Shannon Lott was presented with a proposal at the recent state Natural Resources Commission meeting in Lansing to make permanent a regulation allowing licensed businesses conducting wildlife damage and nuisance control management to use electronic notification devices on their traps.

Stocked splake draw attention to Michigan’s Thumb Lake

The DNR has been stocking splake in Thumb since 1976. During the past five years the state has stocked over 73,000 splake in Thumb, including 23,000 that measured between 7.8 and 7.95 inches last year, and another 10,000 averaging 7.95 inches in 2021. The DNR also has stocked over 40,000 rainbow trout in Thumb Lake since 2019.
