Mail survey shows Michigan’s 2022 deer harvest, hunter numbers drop

According to preliminary results from the DNR’s mail survey of random deer hunters, harvest numbers and hunter numbers were down during the 2022 season.
“These are results from the returned surveys and are still very preliminary,” Brian Frawley, the DNR’s statistician told members of the state Natural Resources Commission at its April 13 meeting at Lansing Community College west campus. “We do have an adjustment factor for the lower response rates, because we tend to overestimate success because often people who return the surveys were the successful ones.”

Outdoor Observations: Volunteers needed to protect Michigan’s iconic lake sturgeon

Spring is in the air. That means spawning runs for fish like walleyes, steelhead, and suckers are occurring in rivers across Michigan. Bass, pike, and panfish also migrate toward shallow waters in their respective lakes for their annual spawning rituals.
Another Michigan native that spawns in the spring is the giant lake sturgeon. The oldest living species in the Great Lakes according to Michigan State University, lake sturgeon fossils have been found dating back 135 million years.

No major changes recommended for duck, goose seasons in Michigan

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission is expected to approve a series of proposals for the 2023 state waterfowl season when it meets in Lansing on April 13. Following a relatively dismal 2022 season, waterfowl biologists and the state Citizens Waterfowl Advisory Committee proposed a 2023 season similar to the 2022 season including another 60-day duck hunt and a 107-day goose hunt.

Lake Erie walleye, perch numbers remain high with big expectations for 2023 anglers

Walleye and perch fishing on Lake Erie should continue to be outstanding this summer and fall, according to new DNR data.
No size or bag limit changes are expected for Michigan waters of Lake Erie from the Lake Erie Committee of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission, which is meeting soon. The committee consists of senior fisheries staff members from the Michigan DNR, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.

Outdoor Observations: Game managers taking steps to improve turkey data from Michigan

There has been some concern in recent years that wild turkey numbers are declining in many parts of the country.
When a Michigan United Conservation Clubs proposal for an increase in the state’s spring turkey harvest surfaced last year, biologists admitted that they really didn’t have enough data on the health and size of our turkey population to make such a decision.
