Outdoor Observations: Michigan bucking a negative trend related to Atlantic salmon populations

The state of Michigan likes to be a trendsetter.
Michigan took the lead in raising funds to keep invasive Asian carp out of the Great Lakes and contribute more funds to that effort than any other individual state. Leadership in Lansing is pushing to have Michigan lead the way on electronic vehicle usage and manufacturing. Now our DNR Fisheries Division and its colleagues at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie are taking the lead and bucking a negative trend related to Atlantic salmon.

Michigan crossbow hunter shoots unusual buck with ‘Bullwinkle’ deer disease

Brian Sheets got quite a surprise when he shot a 6-point white-tailed buck with his crossbow on October 11.
Hunting near his home in Manton, Mich., in Wexford County, Sheets shot a buck he thought had an apple in its mouth. Upon closer examination he realized the entire snout of his buck was swollen, making the animal appear moose-like.

Outdoor Observations: Lack of deer hunters seen in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula an eye opener

I know hunting pressure is down in the Upper Peninsula, but a recent trip through the U.P. was a real eye-opener for its lack of hunter orange.
I traveled through the U.P., from Ironwood at the west end to the Mackinac Bridge at the east end on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. That holiday weekend used to be one of the busiest weekends of the entire deer season, not just the rifle season. That’s not so any more, at least in the U.P.

Stocked walleyes boost bite on Littlefield Lake’s fishery in Michigan

Littlefield Lake in Isabella County has a reputation as being tough to fish.
It’s a deep lake with lots of steep drop-offs close to shore, and limited aquatic vegetation so traditional fishing areas are relatively scarce. But the lake has a good population of warm-water fish species including bass, walleye, pike and panfish, which makes it worth a look. Just don’t expect to catch a limit every time out.

Outdoor Observations: Life of a Michigan conservation officer is not necessarily easy

The Michigan DNR’s Law Enforcement Division, established in 1887, is the oldest law enforcement agency in the state.
DNR’s LED employs about 250 commissioned conservation officers, who patrol all of Michigan’s 83 counties. Their duties include enforcing laws and regulations pertaining to fish and wildlife, state parks, trails, state forests, recreational activities such as off-road vehicle riding, snowmobiling, and boating, and more.

Steelhead limit reduced on several Michigan streams

A one-fish steelhead limit will be imposed year-round for steelhead anglers fishing on several Lake Michigan streams beginning April 1, 2024. A zero-fish limit for wild steelhead also will be enforced on the Pere Marquette River.
Wild steelhead are defined as fish that have their adipose fins intact and not clipped. For management purposes, hatchery fish have their adipose fins clips to identify them. Those changes were approved unanimously by the state Natural Resources Commission at its meeting earlier this month in Lansing.
