Outdoor Observations: Change in Michigan’s coyote hunting season stirs emotion, but the commission got it right

A proposal to return to a coyote hunting season in Michigan that’s closed April 15-July 15 sure raised a lot of emotions in the hunting and trapping community.
I was surprised at the division the proposal caused between folks with the same goals and desires – to enjoy their time hunting, trapping, and/or fishing. Social media attacks by keyboard warriors against fellow hunters and trappers with differing views ranged from shocking to downright nasty.

Michigan DNR receives $39.8M in federal funding in 2024

The Michigan DNR will receive $39.8 million from the Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration Program in 2024. Funds supporting this program are generated through self-imposed excise taxes paid by sportsmen and sportswomen on a variety of hunting, fishing, and boating goods.
This year’s allocation is $5.4 million less than last year.

Michigan furbearer regulations approved, includes three-month closure of coyote hunting on public lands

Despite strong opposition from hunters at its March 14 meeting in Lansing, the Michigan Natural Resources Commission voted 4-2 in favor of a proposed furbearer regulation change that included closing the coyote season April 15 to July 15 on public lands.
The season remains open year-round on private lands if a coyote is doing damage or physically present where it could cause damage.

Outdoor Observations: Michigan biologists have done a fine job of managing the state’s turkey population

Turkey populations seem to be declining in many states to the south, but not so much in Michigan.
Michigan DNR Turkey Specialist Adam Bump said the state’s turkey population appears to be stable. That’s mostly based on harvest numbers and hunter numbers, which the agency tallies each year.

If you’re looking for a lake with diverse fishing opportunities look, no further than Muskegon Lake.
Located at the city of Muskegon in southwestern Muskegon County along the shore of Lake Michigan, Muskegon Lake is a 4,150-acre drowned rivermouth at the end of the Muskegon River. It drains into Lake Michigan through the Muskegon Lake Outlet.

Michigan Natural Resources Commission considering waterfowl season framework

The state Natural Resources Commission is considering a proposal from the Michigan DNR Wildlife Division for the 2024-25 waterfowl hunting seasons. The proposal seeks a 60-day duck season and a 107-day goose season and is nearly identical to last year’s request.
The commission is accepting comments on the proposed regulations and is expected to act on the proposal at its April 11 meeting at Lansing Community College.

‘Pretty good’ spring season expected for Michigan hunters with turkey numbers holding steady

Michigan turkey hunters can expect a spring hunting season very similar to last year according to DNR Turkey Specialist Adam Bump.

Although the Department of Natural Resources’ 2023 turkey harvest report was not yet available at press time, Bump said he didn’t expect much of a change in the harvest or hunter participation than that of the 2022 season. In 2022, 76,547 spring turkey hunters combined to kill as estimated 32,461 bearded turkeys for a 42% success rate  according to the DNR’s report from that season.
