Bass and pike remain popular at Upper Peninsula’s Otter Lake

If you’re looking for an inland lake where you can chase bass in the Upper Peninsula, your options are relatively limited. However, if you’re headed to Houghton County, Otter Lake might be just what the doctor ordered.
With a robust smallmouth fishery and a decent largemouth bite, Otter Lake provides west end bass anglers with a pretty sweet option.

Outdoor Observations: Many questions surrounding wolf shot in southern Michigan

In the last edition of Michigan Outdoor News we reported that a gray wolf had been killed by a coyote hunter in southern Lower Michigan’s Calhoun County.
What made the story so intriguing is that the only known wolf population in the state is more than 300 miles away in the Upper Peninsula. Since wolves remain federally protected under the Endangered Species Act – although many across the state, including me, feel they should be removed from such protections – the claim by the hunter that the wolf was mistaken for a coyote and killed in southern Michigan raised more than a few eyebrows.

Michigan Natural Resources Commission OKs waterfowl seasons, concern for mallards remains

Michigan’s 2024 waterfowl hunting season will look very much like it did in 2023.
At its meeting earlier this month in Lansing, the state Natural Resources Commission voted unanimously to implement a proposal from the DNR Wildlife Division for a season nearly identical to last year’s. The proposal includes a 60-day duck season and a 107-day goose season.

Walleyes welcome anglers to South Manistique Lake in Michigan’s Mackinac County

With 4,001 acres of fishable surface water, South Manistique Lake in Mackinac County supports a robust and diverse fishery.
It’s no secret that South Manistique is a hot spot for walleyes. Annual stocking efforts by the local fishing association supplements a sustainable naturally-reproducing population, and makes South Manistique a destination for many Upper Peninsula walleye anglers.

Outdoor Observations: An opportunity for Michigan residents to take part in deer management

Michigan hunters are keenly aware of the hunter surveys taken annually by the DNR. Many hunters lament the fact that they never receive a survey “on anything” from the DNR.
Well, here is your chance to participate in a deer management survey, but you better hurry because the deadline to comment is April 16. DNR is surveying all Michigan residents (not just hunters) on its website about deer issues important to them.

Walleye, perch tally still strong in Michigan waters of Lake Erie

Exceptional walleye and perch fishing is expected to continue this year in the Western Basin of Lake Erie.
That’s the word from Jim Francis, the Michigan DNR’s Lake Erie Basin coordinator following the release of the lake-wide total allowable catch (TAC) for both species by the binational Lake Erie Committee.
“Everything is looking good,” Francis told Michigan Outdoor News. “We had another good year-class and there will be no changes in regulations. We should have really good walleye fishing and really good perch fishing.”
