Steve Pollick: Northwest Ohio homestead teeming with life as summer wanes to fall

On Sept. 22 at 8:05 p.m., it officially will become autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, spring in the Southern Hemisphere.
It’s all got to do with Earth’s tilt on its axis as it orbits the sun and celestial mechanics, and in a way it is a technicality, however notable. For wildlife and wild plants, however, the science is reduced to the simple fact that day-length is decreasing and that triggers significant hormonal and biochemical changes. The process is called photoperiodism in animals and phototropism in plants, but all hands react accordingly.

Understanding food, drought conditions for early season bowhunting

Driving home at dusk after a quick scouting mission on Sept. 7, a huge buck and another younger buck made their way across the gravel road a few hundred yards in front of the truck.
The bucks had been bedding in a little patch of brushy cover not far off the road that was surrounded by standing corn. The corn is a food source itself, but it’s also an extra layer of security that makes these tiny pockets of brush, small sloughs or grassy fencelines places where big bucks will spend their days in late summer and early fall. An additional draw in this specific situation (and why these bucks were likely here) was a second food source that is a rarity on the landscape in this area of Minnesota.

Commentary: Walz executive order gives Boundary Waters the commonsense protections it needs

Some of my most-treasured memories are of hunting and fishing in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness – and of fillets frying in the pan, of venison tenderloins on the fire grate. Like every Minnesotan, I’m intensely proud of America’s public lands including the wildest portion where we find our greatest, purest outdoors experiences – our wilderness areas.
They are, for common citizens like me, our hunting and fishing estate, a birthright set aside for all of us for all time through the labors and wisdom of generations past.

Where hunters can — and should — pursue antlerless deer in the Adirondacks

It was the last day of the late muzzleloading season in the Northern Zone, and therefore the very last big game hunting day of the season in this part of New York. After spending the morning in the mountains of the southeastern Adirondacks with a few of our crew from the Iron Sight Gang where our rule is “bucks only,” I decided to slip out for the last few hours to a spot on my own property.
The rules are different here. Unlike the mountainous terrain to the north – which is 1,500 feet higher (or more) in elevation, and where whitetails are typically more scarce – deer can be plentiful around my property.

Punt gun history brought to life at Wisconsin’s Waterfowl Hunters Expo

Punt guns go boom in a very big way. Visitors to the Waterfowl Hunters Expo on Aug. 22 in Oshkosh, Wis., got to hear the big boom of a punt gun.
The huge single-shot firearm is so named because of the boat it was mounted on that market hunters, during the 1800s and early 1900s, used to sneak up on resting flocks of ducks on the water and shoot as many as they could with one shot.

Another View: Love for Minnesota’s youth waterfowl weekend

For the first time since 2019, my son and I did not head out onto a local wetland to partake in last weekend’s Minnesota Youth Waterfowl Weekend. Not for lack of interest, quite the contrary, but simply because he’s now 18 years old and a college freshman launching his pursuit of a natural resources management degree.
In other words, we’re waiting for the Sept. 26 regular opener because the desire to hunt and fish is firmly ingrained. So much so that he’s embarking on a career where protecting, managing, and promoting the outdoors will be his daily bread.

Favorable conditions lead to near-record fishing stocking year in North Dakota

Unlike deer, upland game and waterfowl, the production of fisheries is hard to notice on a year-by-year basis. What hasn’t changed is the strong boost the beginning of the early 1990s wet cycle has provided for decades for fishing success in North Dakota.
As it’s been said, we’re living in the good old days of fishing in North Dakota. Partnerships between the North Dakota Game and Fish Department and federal fish hatcheries, combined with favorable environmental conditions this spring, helped produce another successful year of fish stocking across the state.

The Olympics of Wildfowl Art: Federal duck stamp judging set for Sept. 24-25

The federal duck stamp contest: It’s called the Olympics of Wildfowl Art for a reason – and that’s because some of the nation’s best waterfowl artists submit their artwork for judging each year.
The judging of this year’s contest is set to take place Sept. 24-25 at the Ducks Unlimited national headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee. Wisconsin waterfowlers don’t have to travel to Memphis to see the artwork or watch the contest. It will be streamed live by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s duck stamp office.
