Here’s how to make sure you’re getting the right shotgun for you

Shotgunners looking to purchase their first shotgun or upgrade to a new one from a hand-me-down should consider several factors in their decision.
Outdoor News spoke with Jason Gentz, of Gentz Sporting Arms, at his shotgun exhibit at Game Fair in Ramsey, Minn., and asked him for some helpful insights he uses to get his clients lined up for a shotgun. Gentz is a Minnesota-based fine firearms dealer who takes pride in working with his clients to help them find a shotgun or rifle that they will be happy with for a long time.

Meet the top dogs from Minnesota’s 2025 Game Fair

The 44th annual Game Fair, held over two weekends (Aug. 8-10 and Aug. 15-17 in Ramsey) saw thousands of dogs enter the front gate and walk the grounds of Game Fair in Ramsey, Minn.
Many of those dogs and their owners participated in the various dog events, including the five championship-qualifying games: the scurry, goose hunt, obstacle course, and long jump (small dog and large dog). Daily winners took home a big bag of Eukanuba dog food and returned the final Sunday for the championships.

Catch Win Mitchell’s ducky seminars at this year’s Game Fair in Minnesota

Win Mitchell knows a thing or two about introducing people to waterfowl hunting, and he’s going to share as much of his knowledge as people are willing to consume during his daily seminars both weekends of Game Fair (Aug. 8-10 and Aug. 15-17) in Minnesota.
A perennial seminar speaker at the annual event, Mitchell has long been an ambassador for duck hunting and dog training, as well as a tireless conservation leader for wetlands and duck habitat.

Visit Minnesota’s Game Fair to get an across-the-pond perspective on dog training

During the past few decades, Irish-born Labrador retriever trainers have gained an impressive reputation following notable international success – particularly given the small size of Ireland.
Why the success? As with anything in the world of dog training, there’s a multitude of reasons. It’s the old nature versus nurture discussion, and while specialized breeding programs are a strong part of that formula, the nurture side of things seems to give Irish dogs and trainers an edge.

Commentary: Vote yes to support long-term funding for Minnesota’s Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund

Early voting in Minnesota begins on Friday, Sept. 20, and once again Minnesota voters have a chance to support the outdoors when they fill out their ballot.
Or not. As your ballot will clearly state, “Failure to vote on a constitutional amendment will have the same effect as voting no on the amendment.”

Alabama dog trainer Jeremy Criscoe brings skills to Minnesota Game Fair

The Union Grove region of Alabama is adjacent to the famous Guntersville Lake reservoir, and it’s well known among largemouth bass tournament anglers around the world. But many people outside of Alabama are unaware that the lake also is a premier duck-hunting destination.
Jeremy Criscoe was born and raised in Union Grove and grew up waterfowling on that northern Alabama lake, created by a dam on the Tennessee River.
“The best time to waterfowl down here is in late December into January,” Criscoe says.
