Commentary: Vote yes to support long-term funding for Minnesota’s Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund

Early voting in Minnesota begins on Friday, Sept. 20, and once again Minnesota voters have a chance to support the outdoors when they fill out their ballot.
Or not. As your ballot will clearly state, “Failure to vote on a constitutional amendment will have the same effect as voting no on the amendment.”

Alabama dog trainer Jeremy Criscoe brings skills to Minnesota Game Fair

The Union Grove region of Alabama is adjacent to the famous Guntersville Lake reservoir, and it’s well known among largemouth bass tournament anglers around the world. But many people outside of Alabama are unaware that the lake also is a premier duck-hunting destination.
Jeremy Criscoe was born and raised in Union Grove and grew up waterfowling on that northern Alabama lake, created by a dam on the Tennessee River.
“The best time to waterfowl down here is in late December into January,” Criscoe says.

Green Beret brings his dog-handling skills to Game Fair in Minnesota

Ian Donovan is driven by patriotism to serve and defend the United States, and that’s what motivated him to leave his job as a roughneck on Gulf of Mexico oil rigs and become a Green Beret in the U.S. Army Special Forces.
He is also driven by a love of dogs and dog training. What began in his childhood – raising and training hunting dogs – resulted in managing dogs for the Army during six deployments. Dog training continues to this day, now as an expert working with a dog food company.

Mentored turkey hunts provide opportunity, gateway to hunting

While the author’s son, Ronny, had hunted turkeys in the past, he hadn’t yet scored – until this spring, when he hunted by way of a mentoring program sponsored by the Sand Dunes Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. The youth was able to shoot his first turkey, a jake, on the third day of the hunt on Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge.

Whitney Miller brings a bundle of puppy knowledge to Minnesota’s Game Fair

Five years ago, Dennis and Jan Anderson sold their boutique dog-training business, known as BritishLabradors.com, which specialized in premium British Labradors, to Whitney and Josh Miller, of River Stone Kennels in New Richmond, Wis. The Andersons ran the business for more than 25 years and had established a well-respected reputation on both sides of the pond, in England and the United States.
“It’s been an incredible journey, but I have some really big shoes to fill and want to make Jan and Dennis so proud of the work Josh and I do to carry on the program they began years ago,” Whitney Miller said.

Pippitts bringing their popular training advice for both dogs and owners to Minnesota’s Game Fair

Being a professional dog trainer requires a high level of patience, planning, and persistence with whatever breed that’s being worked. But it’s more than just working with dogs.
Because dogs will be going back to their owners, quality dog trainers also make sure to educate those owners, so the time and work invested in the dog training sticks. Working with people – the owners – also requires a high level of patience, planning, and persistence.

Minnesota’s Opener 2023 provides ample chances to “Get the net!”

Something that’s often missing from articles and videos about “take a kid fishing” is the ability to successfully net a fish for your fishing buddy. Actually, that’s a skill most how-to fishing articles overlook, but it’s absolutely crucial.
You can have the best-equipped boat with all the latest gear sitting on a dream location with fish all over the place, but if you or your fishing buddy can’t get a fish in the net on the first scoop, it could be all for naught.
