Pennsylvania legislator wants hearing on deputy cuts

A state legislator is calling for a hearing after the Pennsylvania Game Commission and state Fish & Boat Commission abruptly ended their deputy law enforcement programs.
Both programs will cease Sept. 1, and statements issued by both agencies didn’t give a specific reason for the move. But the decision has caught the ire of at least two state representatives who sit on the House Game and Fisheries Committee, and one is calling for a joint hearing with the Senate and representatives of Gov. Josh Shapiro’s office.

Glenn Sapir: New York 14-year-old knows baseball and big bass

I’ve traveled throughout the Hudson Valley and even spent a week in Cooperstown to watch the youths on the Marlboro Marlins play baseball. The main attraction for me was my grandson, who lives for baseball.
A teammate that caught my eye was Ryan Knapp, the Marlin’s centerfielder, who could throw bullets to the cut-off man and even to home plate. It was only last year, however, that I learned that this young man from Kerhonkson in Ulster County, N.Y., can also fire casts to bass lairs around the state and beyond.

What can Ohio deer hunters expect in 2026? Plenty more deer on the landscape

One thing is for certain about the upcoming fall archery deer hunt: There should be no shortage of deer on the Ohio landscape from which hunters can choose.
That’s the early word from Clint McCoy, the ODNR Division of Wildlife’s deer program administrator, who sat for an interview with Ohio Outdoor News in late July.
“Really any deer hunter this year can expect a continuation of what we’ve been seeing over the past couple of years,” he said. “And that’s more deer on the landscape.”

Looking for a backwoods black bear? Here’s what to know

Bear hunting in the Adirondack Forest Preserve has become my favorite seasonal pursuit. Every fall, before the weather gets too far gone, I spend a week alone hunting and camping. The goal is always the same: to hunt and hike until I hopefully come across a black bear in its natural mountain habitat.
As these trips go, the plan on paper always sounds easier than the actual trip on the ground.

Profiling the latest ATVs and UTVs

Side-by-sides continue to dominate the off-road vehicle market, with manufacturers offering increased power, enclosed cabs, factory HVAC, automotive-style technology, and more specialized vehicles.
However, manufacturers of traditional single-seat quads continue to remain innovative, with smart electronic suspensions, integrated touchscreens with GPS mapping, and factory-installed heavy-duty winches and upgraded electronic power steering (EPS). Here are some of the models you can expect to see in showrooms in the next few weeks.

Gretchen Steele: Around here, the best things leave tracks in the mud

Some anniversaries arrive looking polished and put together. There’s cake, speeches, and a program folded in someone’s hand. Others wander in from the bottoms with mud on their boots, coffee cooling in a paper cup, and marsh water on their cuffs – clear signs they’ve been somewhere worth the mess.
Twenty years – when you say it out loud, it sounds so tidy, so simple. But anyone who’s helped with a conservation banquet knows that it’s never that simple.
