Donations keep four Michigan waterfowl hunting areas open in 2026, though root of issue remains

A last-minute fundraising effort by Michigan waterfowl hunters and conservation groups will help preserve hunter access at four state-managed waterfowl areas this fall.
Waterfowl hunting advocates have raised $80,000 to provide temporary staffing at four Michigan DNR-managed properties after the agency announced that budget constraints would force it to reduce daily hunting opportunities during the state’s 2026 waterfowl seasons.

Some hunters in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula may earn a second buck through new pilot program

Michigan hunters in five counties will be able to earn a second buck in 2027 through a pilot program approved by the Michigan Natural Resources Commission this month.
The pilot program will coincide with implementation of a one-buck rule approved by the commission in May that’s designed to reduce deer abundance in the Lower Peninsula, while improving buck structure and the buck-to-doe ratio. “The Natural Resources Commission asked that we develop an earn-a-second-buck pilot program to determine the effectiveness of the regulations at increasing antlerless harvest,” Brent Rudolph, the Michigan DNR’s deer, elk, and moose specialist, told Michigan Outdoor News.

Sweeping changes to Pennsylvania elk hunts include revamped zones, rifle rut opportunity

Archery elk season begins Sept. 12, and for the first time in over 10 years the Pennsylvania Game Commission has redrawn the elk hunt zones.
In addition, this fall’s seasons split the regular (rifle) elk hunting season into two separate parts, Oct. 3-11 and Oct. 31-Nov. 8 – with the new session added earlier, while the elk are still in the rut. There are also 15 additional bull elk tags offered for this fall. Combined, these three changes make up the greatest change in Pennsylvania elk hunting since the modern-day elk season began.

The strategy behind four decades of Illinois skunk numbers

If you’ve ever driven a back road on a summer night and caught that unmistakable whiff of a striped skunk, you know they’re out there. But for wildlife managers, the real question isn’t whether skunks are around, it is: How many are out there? Where are they thriving? And are their numbers going up or down?
Long-term population monitoring is one of the cornerstones of wildlife management.
