Wisconsin DNR seeking user input on plan for state parks

The public has an opportunity to provide input for the next 10-year state parks plan through an online survey on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources website. The survey will be open until 11:59 p.m. Aug. 4.
The survey asks 21 questions about citizens’ visits to state parks, their opinions on conditions at the parks and future desires for the parks.

Wisconsin’s 2026 pheasant counts above 5-year average, stocking numbers cut

This spring’s Wisconsin pheasant survey showed a slight decrease of 9.6% from 2025, but according to the Department of Natural Resources, that number is still above the most recent five-year survey average.
Taylor Finger, DNR game bird ecologist, told a meeting of the DNR Pheasant Advisory Team members June 24 that the highest counts are still found in the northwest corner of the state.
“It (statewide) shows a slight dip, but we are still doing quite well,” Finger said.

Wisconsin’s 2026 antlerless quotas very similar to 2025

A short-handed Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) adopted a 2026 deer season framework very similar to 2025 based on recommendations from County Deer Advisory Councils (CDAC) and the Department of Natural Resources.
During its June 24 meeting, five board members spent almost two hours discussing the season and whether or not to go along with recommendations of the Buffalo County CDAC that nixed the holiday hunt and late January archery season.

Ryan Rothstein: A summer fawn’s potential, a hunter’s optimism

I’m not an optimist by nature. But as deer hunters, every single one of us is prone to bouts of hopefulness, whether we admit it or not. How else do you explain rising before dawn to go sit in miserably cold temperatures waiting around on the chance that something walks by? Hope is the only explanation.
Something that I love about whitetails is the consistency they provide me.

An Ontario fly-in adventure is a great July option for Michigan anglers

July is a great month for fishing in Michigan, but it is also the perfect time to plan an Ontario fly-in fishing adventure. There are plenty of destinations that you can drive to in Ontario, but even a short flight adds to the adventure and improves the chances of finding great fishing.
An Ontario fly-in trip was on my bucket list until about five years ago. Fishing Hall of Famer Mark Martin invited me to tag along on a fly-in trip to PK Resort/Granite Hill Lodge. I quickly jumped on the opportunity. I went back last year, and I’m planning a return visit this year. Ontario adventures are addictive.

What’s behind the resurgence of lever-action rifles?

Lever-action hunting rifles are “hot” because they’re cool again.
Modern westerns like Tombstone, Wyatt Earp, and Yellowstone have raised the lever-action profile. Restrictions on some “AR-style” autoloading rifles for home defense made speedy lever-actions viable in that market. The legalizing of a straight-wall “cowboy” cartridge for deer hunting in former shotgun-only states contributed.

The Minnesota fish harvest debate: Are we taking more fish than we thought?

Tori McCormick’s June 5 news story in Outdoor News summarized the recent study in the journal of the American Fisheries Society that reported that anglers in Minnesota take home about 80 million pounds of fish annually, whereas an earlier DNR estimate came in at 30 million pounds.
That seems like a major underestimate, although Brad Parsons, Minnesota DNR fisheries chief, thinks the 80-million pound estimate is inflated, but did not say by how much. There are at least two issues that might temper the new study, the data, and the consequences of the findings.
