State of Lake Erie watershed debated at conference in Ohio

The Lake Erie Waterkeepers, formed in 2005 by Executive Director Sandy Bihn, have two primary goals for the watershed: to make Lake Erie fishable and swimmable.
Among other accomplishments, it has successfully prevailed in getting a 50% reduction in phosphorous loading at Detroit’s wastewater plant; seek Clean Water Act impaired status for western Lake Erie; supported a ban that was enacted for open water disposal of dredge spoils; and initiated meetings that led to stocking lake sturgeon into the Maumee River.

Commentary: TB research involving baiting not applicable to Michigan deer herd

Research that has been done about the transmission of TB to deer via baiting at the National Animal Disease Lab in Ames, Iowa is not applicable to what happens in the wild in Michigan, but it is being used to ban baiting anyway.
At the same time, information about how the use of bait by deer hunters can increase hunter success and harvest, thereby helping reduce the number of diseased deer on the landscape, is being ignored.

Decline of yellow perch in Michigan’s Saginaw Bay a ‘survival problem’

The pattern of declining yellow perch survival rates in Saginaw Bay appears to be continuing its downward trend, according to the information shared by Research Biologist Dave Fielder, of the Michigan DNR.
Fielder noted historical harvest results that have been tracked by the DNR for nearly 40 years. Estimates indicate that the recreational harvest and year-round angler catch per unit effort, as well as the commercial yield of Saginaw Bay perch, have each dropped significantly from their respective record highs.

Tom Venesky: Mentors can wait a week to catch trout in Pennsylvania

As a father of two kids who love to fish, I see the benefits of Pennsylvania’s mentored youth trout day firsthand.
But there’s another perspective to consider. The purpose of the youth day is clear: give kids a chance to fish for stocked trout before the opening-day crowds. By doing so, they stand a good chance of catching a few fish, having a positive experience and hopefully become lifelong anglers. What could be wrong with that?
