The Lake Erie Waterkeepers, formed in 2005 by Executive Director Sandy Bihn, have two primary goals for the watershed: to make Lake Erie fishable and swimmable.
Among other accomplishments, it has successfully prevailed in getting a 50% reduction in phosphorous loading at Detroit’s wastewater plant; seek Clean Water Act impaired status for western Lake Erie; supported a ban that was enacted for open water disposal of dredge spoils; and initiated meetings that led to stocking lake sturgeon into the Maumee River.
