Commentary: Wisconsin DNR budget – plenty of blame to spread all around

When it comes to the politics of how to best spend a multi-billion-dollar state budget surplus, everyone’s been an expert lately.
If I were governor for a day, I’d give all taxpayers a rebate, fill a few million potholes and still have enough left to boost Wisconsin’s tourism economy by finally tackling some of the needed upgrades at fish hatcheries, state parks, and public boat launches.

Vermont celebrates its wild turkey restoration history

On a breezy Saturday afternoon in mid-April, over 150 people gathered in the tiny Vermont unincorporated village of West Pawlet – just 200 yards from the New York border – to celebrate the reintroduction and eventual hunting success of wild turkeys.
It was in Pawlet nearly six decades ago that a handful of turkeys captured in New York were released. They prospered to the point where they were used as a resource to stock other parts of the state and further beyond.

Spongy moth activity is down in New York, but is still on the radar

In the wake of several serious spongy moth (also known as gypsy moth) outbreaks earlier this decade, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has provided an update on the situation.
The spongy moth (Lymantria dispar) is a non-native insect from Europe. In New York, spongy moth caterpillars feed on a variety of trees, with oak as their preferred species.

New York’s outdoor writers hand out annual honors

The New York State Outdoor Writers Association recently held its spring conference in the northern Catskills/Hudson Valley region.
As is typical at this yearly meeting, dozens of awards were doled out, including to some affiliated with New York Outdoor News. The group also sampled some of the fishing and turkey hunting offerings and held a special event at the Glencadia Rod & Gun Club, in Kinderhook.
