Minnesota DNR, license agents prepare for June 9 launch of electronic licensing system

Bait shop owners and license agents in Minnesota are preparing for a June 9 release of the new Electronic Licensing System, but some retailers had criticisms of equipment costs following recent training webinars.
During the webinars, DNR staff and ELS partners demonstrated how the system works and answered questions from the retailers. There are about 1,500 license agents statewide.

Deer from Hunters Feeding Illinois provided 138,900 meals

Hunters Feeding Illinois distributed 366 pounds of lean protein to food pantries across Illinois during the 2025-26 hunting season – providing an estimated 128,900 meals in 48 counties.
The donated venison has an estimated retail value of more than $320,000, based on USDA averages for nutritionally similar protein, helping food pantries stretch limited resources while increasing access to lean meat.

Outdoor Insights: Legal action in corner crossing debate, and a job that sounds too good to be true

“It doesn’t matter what side of the barbed wire or political aisle you stand on, we are all public land owners with a vested interest in our public lands,” said Ryan Callaghan, BHA president and CEO. “Corner crossing while respecting private property is a practical ‘middle ground’ that the vast majority of Montanans support.

Mom, daughters ‘triple-up’ on first birds during Wisconsin hunt

Going three-for-three is a pretty good average for turkey hunters, and three young ladies recorded that perfect score during a recent learn-to-hunt (LTH) outing.
Mother Libby Stark, 38, and sisters Ava Stark, 12, and Riley Stark, 10, all of Prairie du Chien, Wis., participated in the Bluff Country Long Spurs Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation LTH program in Crawford County. Each shot their first turkey the morning of March 29 while hunting with mentors.

Patrick Durkin: No room for guilt if scoring on rare gobbler double

If I didn’t view turkeys as nature’s most fickle, frustrating and fascinating bird, I might have felt guilty for shooting a gobbler May 8 as it stood confused while its buddy flapped its last among my decoys.
I suspect that Emily Krumenauer, my hunting buddy and family-friend, frazzled my gobbler’s composure when she shot its running mate seconds earlier with her late father’s Model 12 Winchester.

New York’s Sara-Spa State Park moving forward with bowhunting to control deer herd

More than 30 people turned out for a May 14 meeting at Saratoga-Spa State Park to hear and discuss a proposal to allow bowhunting on over 600 acres of parkland this fall.
Park officials and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation have determined that white-tailed deer are over-browsing many areas of the park and that the proposal is a “good start” to addressing the situation.
