Minnesota Legacy bill finds new life as session deadline looms

Minnesota legislators reached an agreement Friday on a $191 million Legacy funding bill that many State Capitol operatives just 24 hours earlier thought was dead for 2026.
The Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council (LSOHC) appropriations bill passed through the House Ways and Means Committee on a voice vote late Friday afternoon and is now headed to the House floor.

Michigan United Conservation Clubs will call it quits this summer

Michigan United Conservation Clubs, the largest statewide conservation organization in the nation, will dissolve this summer after nearly 90 years advocating for hunters, anglers, and trappers.
“Despite the deep commitment of its members, partners, and supporters, MUCC has faced sustained financial challenges that have impacted its long-term sustainability,” the group wrote in a press release announcing the decision.

Drastic cut to Michigan DNR law enforcement included in budget approved by House Republicans

Negotiations continue in Lansing over a Fiscal Year 2027 budget with Republicans and Democrats offering vastly different approaches to funding the DNR.
While proposals from Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Senate Democrats heed calls from DNR officials to “right-size the costs of hunting and fishing in Michigan” with license fee increases to generate about $29.4 million in additional revenue, the budget approved by House Republicans rejects license increases and instead aims to cut the DNR’s law enforcement budget by $19 million, and wildlife management by $6.7 million.

One-buck rule gets nod in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula

Lower Peninsula deer hunters will be limited to harvesting one antlered deer per season starting in 2027, following a vote by the Michigan Natural Resources Commission.
Hunters in the Upper Peninsula won’t be limited to one buck, as a DNR recommendation for a statewide one-buck rule did not gain traction. The NRC approved the “one-buck rule” in the LP during a day-long session in Gaylord on May 13.

New York DEC biologist, commissioner weigh in on antlerless deer proposals as public comment deadline looms

As the public comment period for a series of proposed hunting regulations, mainly involving antlerless deer, is poised to close, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said it will not rush to make decisions regarding the potential adoption of the proposals.
As of mid-May, with about a week to go in the comment period that ends Sunday, May 17, DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton and Big Game Unit Leader Brendan Quirion said during a meeting with members of the New York State Outdoor Writers Association that there were over 900 comments to sort through at that time.

Michigan DNR staff complete steelhead egg collection after lightning strike damage

After a lightning strike at the Little Manistee River Weir (Manistee County) threatened to derail steelhead egg collection for this season, the Department of Natural Resources rallied to collect approximately 4.2 million steelhead eggs for Michigan’s state fish hatcheries.
Staff were able to proceed with collection at the Little Manistee Weir, as well as deploy the Lower Platte River Weir (Benzie County) as a backup egg source for the first time.

EHD hit Ohio’s deer herd harder than it ever has in 2025; some surprises come from it

Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) showed up in 44 Ohio counties in the summer of 2025, marking the most significant outbreak of the often-fatal deer disease in the state’s history.
That fact was shared recently by Clint McCoy, the ODNR Division of Wildlife’s deer program administrator. McCoy was a guest speaker on the state of deer disease in Ohio at the recent annual conference of the Outdoor Writers of Ohio (OWO) in Cambridge.
