Megan Plete: Sandhills, spring snow, and a Nebraska longbeard

Last month I found myself in a rustic tent camp in the sandhills region of Nebraska with a number of other outdoor media folk from around the country and even Canada. We all came to accomplish the same goal: kill a Merriam turkey.
On the first evening, we drove through winding hills as red dust and gravel scattered behind the flatbed, the kind of country that feels bigger the farther you get into it. Birds were everywhere.

Controversy grows over planned turnpike deep ‘cut’ through Pennsylvania’s Allegheny Mountain

A massive turnpike modernization planned for the Allegheny Mountain Tunnel in southwestern Pennsylvania is drawing strong opposition.
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission plans to build a 1,000-foot wide, 250-foot-deep highway through the Allegheny Mountain in Somerset County to bypass the existing twin-tube system, claiming it is needed to replace aged infrastructure, accommodate greater traffic volume, and provide for trucks carrying hazardous materials.

South Dakota aims for more Black Hills elk while instituting liberal, open season ‘East River’

South Dakota wildlife officials are raising the state’s elk population goal in the Black Hills, while taking the opposite approach east of the Missouri River.
The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Commission moved on Thursday, May 7 to revise its initial draft elk management plan, increasing the Black Hills elk population objective from 6,000 to 8,000 elk to 6,000 to 9,000 elk.

Jeremiah Haas: The conclusion of a failed turkey hunt

We started this story in the last issue of Illinois Outdoor News – the one highlighting the importance of sharing examples of failure, along with examples of success.
Going into 2026, I had decided that I was going to attempt to harvest two birds with one shot. I never had the tags to accomplish the feat. So, this year I decided to get two first-season tags and solely concentrate on accomplishing this task.

The best turkey tip I ever got…

If you were lucky enough to cut your teeth on turkey hunting in the 1990s-era Midwest, your glasses are rose-colored – for good reason.
Turkey populations were booming, expanding into new areas and bolstered where they already existed. In my neck of the woods, while turkeys certainly weren’t dumb, they were plentiful and new enough to the area that they hadn’t had a decade’s-worth (or more) of education on the ways of whitetail hunters who’d converted to gobbler-getters.
