Lake Ontario walleye stocking evaluation plan taking shape in New York

The walleye population of Lake Ontario is getting some more attention in 2026 as New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has already initiated a walleye stocking evaluation plan for this year.
According to the agency, the purpose of the walleye stocking evaluation study is to determine the proportion of stocked and naturally produced walleyes in the fishery at each stocked location.

Copycat and cover calling can close the deal on spring gobblers

Copycat and cover calling will put more toms on the ground than any creative sounds you might conjure up to close the deal. Getting a boss hen hopping hot and heading your way is a prime example. If you’ve ever witnessed two hens trading barbs, you know what I mean.
Your calling job is to pull in the hen so that she is almost in your lap, i.e. close enough so that you can shoot any trailing tom.

Steve Carney: Keys to incredible April walleye fishing on the Missouri River

April on the Missouri River is my favorite time of the open water season. This is when the spawn gets going – during these first few weeks of the month.
Things on the river radically change when the water temperatures reach 44 degrees, meaning the male walleyes head to the rip-rap, rock areas, and congregate in big numbers. Large females also roam the spawning areas but mostly at night.

Steve Sarley: Trey McKinney making Illinois anglers proud

It was another exciting Bassmaster Classic. Dylan Nutt took the lead on Saturday and cruised to victory after the third day. Nutt is only 23 years old.
The amazing thing about this Classic is that the second-place finisher was from Illinois. Would you have ever thought that a young stick from the Land of Lincoln would come so close to winning the largest event in the world of professional fishing? Trey McKinney is on the cusp of a Hall of Fame bass fishing career, and he is only 21 years old.

New York, coastal states ease black sea bass regulations

New York’s saltwater anglers should enjoy a big increase in black sea bass landings this year, thanks to a series of actions taken by the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission’s Summer Flounder, Scup, and Black Sea Bass Management Board.
