Again led by southern Illinois counties, youth turkey hunters kicked off the spring season by setting yet another harvest record.
DNR reported that a total of 2,318 birds were taken over two weekends, easily topping the then-record 2,099 last spring. It was the third consecutive year of record-setting harvests for the season.

A Wisconsin hunter inadvertently called in a bobcat during the opening weekend of this year’s spring turkey hunt.
Carson Bender, 19, of Wisconsin Rapids, was sitting against a tree in full camo on April 18, which was Period A of this year’s season. Bender’s video, which was uploaded to social media and shared widely in the ensuing days, was reported on by a variety of news outlets in multiple countries.

A rare sighting of a burrowing owl in southwestern Minnesota is turning heads as it arrived in the region. The state-endangered raptor was spotted in a ditch near a cornfield in Redwood Falls.
Leslie Schlemmer, area resident, spotted the owl on April 15 and contacted local wildlife photographer and friend, Ben Staterau. She sent him a few photos and piqued his interest.
