Wisconsin’s Lac du Flambeau closes more lakes to non-tribal members

The Lac du Flambeau Tribal Council announced recently a revision to its list of lakes that are being closing immediately to non-tribal member hook-and-line fishing for walleyes and muskies.
In a species-specific move the tribe says is aimed at studying, stocking and rehabbing state waters within the reservation, the council approved resolution No. 6526, which states non-tribal members are prohibited from targeting walleyes and muskies on the following lakes.

Wisconsin 3-year-old fires shot while turkey hunting, wounds two people

A 34-year-old hunter mentoring a 3-year-old child Sunday afternoon, April 12, during Wisconsin’s two-day youth-only turkey season helped the youngster aim at and shoot another man and a 7-year-old child after mistaking their movements for a turkey in western Racine County.
Pellets from the 12-gauge shotgun struck the 7-year-old’s head, and the man’s left hand, shoulder and backside as they hunted turkeys on state forest lands in the Rochester township.

25 arrested in second attack on Wisconsin’s Ridglan Farms dog facility

Sirens bawled across the countryside Saturday, April 18, as law enforcement from 17 agencies raced to the town of Blue Mounds to stem an unprecedented tide of animal activists who once again broke into Ridglan Farms, a scientific research and dog breeding facility there.
“It was clear from the beginning that this was not going to be a peaceful protest,” said Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett.

Minnesota anglers await prime temps as delayed steelhead season builds

The spring steelhead run on rivers along Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior is just starting to crank up as warmer temperatures have begun to open iced-over tributaries across most of the region.
The annual spring spawning migration, thanks to a cold, snowy and rainy early spring, is about two to three weeks behind schedule, which has many steelhead diehards champing at the bit, state officials say.

Mike Schoonveld: How many hooks are needed on a lure, and why?

Years ago, there was an ongoing argument among Great Lakes salmon and trout anglers whether spoons or trolling flies with single hooks are better fish-catchers than lures with treble hooks.
That debate has quieted over time, but it hasn’t disappeared. Some anglers still swap trebles for singles, while others go the opposite direction, replacing factory single hooks with trebles.

White bass bite should peak soon on Ohio rivers

The peak times for a white bass migration varies from year to year.
Catchable numbers arrive on the tails of retreating walleyes. Temperature and rainfall have a strong influence on the strength and duration. Even among the adjacent rivers of the Western Basin of Lake Erie, the Maumee, the Sandusky, and the Portage, the peak of each river precedes or lags a week or so from the next river not too far away.
