Got a hankering to build a wooden canoe? Here’s how to do it

The final boat: Yes, it weighs more than a carbon fiber or kevlar watercraft, but you’ll never experience more satisfaction while paddling than in your own, hand-crafted cedar-strip canoe. (Photos by Mark Neuzil)

“The way of a canoe is the way of the wilderness and of a freedom almost forgotten. It is an antidote to insecurity, the open door to waterways of ages past and a way of life with profound and abiding satisfactions. When a man is part of his canoe, he is part of all that canoes have ever known.”
That insight from the Ely, Minn., author and activist Sigurd Olson dates to 1956, when most canoes were made from wood and canvas and an aluminum canoe introduced by Bill Grumman started to command the market.
