New amendments to deer season regulations get reviewed by Michigan NRC

Proposed amendments made by Natural Resources Commission members at a meeting this month could dramatically change major modifications to the Michigan deer season that had already been recommended prior to the meeting.
It is now “wait and see” for the state’s hunters.

Flood project dispute slows progress for conservation projects in Minnesota

The Minnesota House Legacy Finance Committee failed to advance a funding bill for the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council on April 15 after lawmakers fell short of the required votes, delaying support for future conservation projects.
The committee took up HF3879, authored by Rep. Samantha Vang, DFL-Brooklyn Park, but the bill did not receive enough support to move to the House Ways and Means Committee and was laid over for possible inclusion in a future omnibus bill.

Tom Venesky: Proposal for July 1 start to Pennsylvania’s ag tag deer season ‘ethically wrong’

Commissioner Kristen Koppenhafer made a point that every ethical hunter should agree with, yet she was in the minority.
During the April 11 Pennsylvania Game Commission board meeting, an amendment was made to change the start of ag tag season from Aug. 1 to July 1. It was a horrendous idea from a conservation standpoint, and it could’ve erupted into a public relations nightmare for the sport of hunting in general.

Know when to go quiet in the turkey woods

I have loved spring turkey hunting ever since I started with my dad in upstate New York in 1975. It was all pretty new back then and we learned it together.
I can’t say that I have been consistently successful in bagging a bird, but I love being in the woods in the springtime. Turkey hunting led directly to bird watching. You don’t always encounter turkeys, but you always hear songbirds.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Troubling genetics in Pennsylvania’s elk herd?

At the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s April 10-11 meeting, Commissioner Dennis Fredericks, of Washington County, asked agency elk biologist Jeremy Banfield if he is concerned about a century of inbreeding affecting the elk herd, with no new genes coming in from other elk populations.
“Do you ever worry about genetic diversity?” Fredericks said. “I mean, 1,400 elk, year after year after year after year of breeding … are you concerned at all about it?”

Hunter and trapper education appreciation day a big hit in southwest Ohio

A lot of talking, comparing notes, and networking took place at the Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife (DOW) Hunter and Trapper Education Appreciation Day for southwestern Ohio. The Hamilton chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America (IWLA) hosted the event recently.
The day began with Matt Ortman, Division of Wildlife hunter-trapper education coordinator, overseeing a discussion about the hunter and trapper safety courses, the decline in numbers, the aging population of hunters, and competition from school sports.

Out-of-the-ordinary tactics to tip the turkey odds in your favor

Let’s face it, most of us end up having to hunt pressured turkeys sooner or later.
Whether you are hunting public land, small patches of private land, with neighbors who like to over-call and educate the birds that frequent your hunting property, too, you’ve missed or blown it on a bird or two and now they’re on to you.
