Michigan’s steelhead egg collection endures hit

Storms that hit Michigan pushed back the planned start of steelhead egg collections at the Little Manistee River Weir after damage caused a power failure, resulting in the loss of some of the fish.
The effect the loss will have for this season was still unknown, DNR reported. The facility is the only source of steelhead in Michigan, and is a primary source for other states.

On April 1, the organization began seeking volunteers to help through early June to stand guard as mature fish head upstream to their spawning sites along the Black River in Cheboygan County.
