A new rule that requires all turkey hunters to report their successful hunt within 72 hours of harvest or before transferring possession of the bird may have flown under some hunters’ proverbial radars.

Storms that hit Michigan pushed back the planned start of steelhead egg collections at the Little Manistee River Weir after damage caused a power failure, resulting in the loss of some of the fish.
The effect the loss will have for this season was still unknown, DNR reported. The facility is the only source of steelhead in Michigan, and is a primary source for other states.

Help Wanted: Michigan resident to stand guard over lake sturgeon.
The Black Lake Chapter of “Sturgeon For Tomorrow” is partnering with Michigan DNR and tribal governments to protect lake sturgeon from illegal harvest during the fish’s six-week spawning season. On April 1, the organization began seeking volunteers to help through early June to stand guard as mature fish head upstream to their spawning sites along the Black River in Cheboygan County.
The Michigan Natural Resources Commission voted unanimously to pass a resolution opposing Consumers Energy’s planned sale of 13 hydropower dams. The vote came during the NRC’s April 8 meeting in Lansing.

Minnesota’s fishing advocacy organization, MN-FISH, hosted more than 230 people for its 2026 Angler’s Summit last Friday, April 17, with almost eight hours of programming.
It was an opportunity to celebrate fishing in the state, air concerns, learn about fisheries-related research, and discuss the role that anglers play in preserving the state’s fisheries.
