State Roundup: No shortage of opportunities for Wisconsin anglers these days

It’s almost getting to the point where a fisherman might ask why we even have any closed seasons anymore.
Wisconsin’s stream trout season closure has been pushed into October. This year, on April 4, our inland stream trout “keep” season opened, and will continue to do so the first Saturday of each April. The winter trout release season opened in January and ran through Friday, April 3, then gave way to the new keep season.

When calling turkeys, understand how to close the deal

When answering a gobbler’s call, sometimes success in closing the deal requires reverse psychology.
The auditory experience afforded by a lusty gobble is electric, intensely resonant and emotionally charged. A hunter’s call in response should carry a full charge of emotion as well. Well-rehearsed turkey hunters use selected variations of volume, pitch, rhythm, cadence … and, on occasion, even silence to close the deal.

Spring combat fishing on Minnesota waters of the Mississippi River

It was well after 8 a.m. when my buddy Eric and I launched my boat below a lock and dam on the Mississippi River and motored across the channel to target pre-spawn walleyes and saugers.

How to catch tight-lipped crappie in the spring

Some blame the weather while others blame the time of day or the location for the conditions at hand. Tight-lipped crappies start the discussions or become the ongoing arguments over the line used, the lure, the color, rod length and action, even the presentation.
No one knows for sure who is right, because continuous success is rare with the same setup. On any given day, for no obvious reason, you cannot make crappies bite like you did the time before.

Polaris closing western Wisconsin plant

Polaris, Inc., recently announced plans to permanently close its manufacturing facility in the Polk County, Wis., town of Osceola by the end of 2026.
Located less than an hour from the Twin Cities and nestled in the bluffs of the Saint Croix River Valley, Osceola was founded in 1844. The community of 2,600 people has established industrial and airport business parks and now faces the loss of 200 jobs.
