Steve Carney: Think ahead to open water; and concerns of low water levels

The ice fishing season has been long and productive in Minnesota, and I am spending most of my time preparing for the switch from ice to open water.
Three months on the ice was enough although it was a great season with super ice conditions. But it’s time to make the transition! Here are some of usual tasks that I tackle at this time in mid-March.

Commentary: MN-Fish position statement on proposed walleye limit reduction in Minnesota

Minnesota’s sportfishing organization – MN-FISH – will not support or oppose a statewide change in the state’s walleye harvest limit from 6 to 4.
The decision by the MN-FISH board to remain neutral reflects frustration with the proposal. The organization does not believe the proposed four-fish limit on its own will have a substantial effect on walleye populations or angler success.

Lead ammo, tackle sees debate in Minnesota legislature

An informational hearing at the Environment, Climate and Legacy Senate meeting on March 5 debated the future of lead ammunition and fishing tackle in Minnesota.
A number of organizations testified for and against removing lead from ammo and angling equipment. Sen. Jennifer McEwen, DFL-Duluth, has authored bill SF1595 with Sen. Alice Mann, DFL-Edina. It aims to phase lead out of ammunition and tackle.

Commentary: Claims of ‘more bears than deer’ rings true for some Michigan hunters

I’ve heard reports from other Upper Peninsula residents about having more bear than deer on their deer baits during November (baiting deer remains legal in the UP). I’ve now had the same experience in Keweenaw County.
One of my deer baits in the oaks, where there’s an excellent mast crop last fall, has had between six and 10 bears on it, most of which are sows with cubs. Deer are also in the oaks, taking advantage of the acorns, but there are fewer of them on camera at that location than bears.
