Ongoing study takes a close look at Michigan’s moose population

Michigan researchers now have 56 moose wearing GPS collars, part of a project now in its second year to better understand survival and population growth of the animal in the western UP.
Earlier this month, 41 new moose were captured and collared, while two others that had been captured last year were outfitted with new collars. Included in the newly-collared group were 20 adult females, 10 adult males and 11 calves.

Steve Carney: Seek out ‘shade’ for panfish under the ice

Every once in a while you learn something on the water (or the ice) that qualifies as revolutionary.
A buddy recently came across a pattern of locating crappies and bluegills under snow drifts. I can’t believe I haven’t stumbled on this pattern myself, but I tried it out recently and found success. Here are some thoughts on this revolutionary technique.

Nominee for BLM director faces pushback regarding his record on public lands

Former New Mexico congressman and Bureau of Land Management director nominee Stevan Pearce faced the U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee for a nomination hearing on Wednesday, Feb. 25 answering multiple rounds of targeted questions regarding his views on everything from energy development to resource management plans to grazing. But, as expected, the topic of public lands selloffs was the star of the show.

Lynx kits documented in Minnesota’s Voyageurs National Park for first time

Last September, one of the hundreds of trail cameras that the Voyageurs Wolf Project has deployed in and around Voyageurs National Park caught a glimpse of a rare lynx event that previously had been undocumented.
“It was exciting because it was the first time that kittens had been documented in Voyageurs National Park,” said Thomas Gable, the project lead.

Tom Pink: Checking its stomach will tell your fish’s story

Too many hours of staring into an empty spear hole in my ice shack lately has me wondering about what I can do to get more fish to appear. While the fishing was good in January, it has slowed considerably in February, which is traditionally a slow time for ice fishing in many places.
A long-standing practice for many anglers luring whitefish in Michigan’s St. Mary’s River is to put down a “feed bed” of any combination of things, mostly cooked rice, canned corn, and oatmeal.
