Legislation to open mining near Minnesota’s Boundary Waters moves to Senate after House vote

The U.S. House of Representatives voted 214 to 208 on Wednesday afternoon in favor of legislation that would reverse a 20-year Biden-era ban on mining near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
The 20-year withdrawal from 2023 removed 225,000 acres in the Superior National Forest in the Rainy River watershed near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness from new mining.

More public property parcels to be drilled in Ohio

A state board voted Jan. 13 to open up about 6,600 acres of public land from Ohio’s Jockey Hollow and Egypt Valley Wildlife Areas to the natural gas industry.
The news that the state’s Oil and Gas Land Management Commission issued the approval first appeared in the online Signal Akron. The Jan. 13 vote continues a relatively new legal process in Ohio that enables oil and gas companies to pay the state for leasing rights to drill and extract natural gas from publicly owned parks and designated wildlife areas.

Lake Vesuvius, an important fishing destination in southeast Ohio, is high and dry due to issue with dam gate

Lake Vesuvius in southeast Ohio is small at just 121 acres, but its stature makes it no less important for sportsmen and women in the region.
Today, Vesuvius is a shadow of its former self. It is high and dry, bereft of water.
“The (USDA) Forest Service is repairing a component of the Lake Vesuvius dam after routine inspections identified an issue with the slide gate system,” Anna Owens, a public affairs officer with the Forest Service at Wayne National Forest, said in an email to Ohio Outdoor News.

Winter weather drives geese seldom seen in the state to Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania’s winter skies delivered an unusual spectacle this season, as a convergence of weather systems and migration dynamics produced one of the most notable goose fallouts the commonwealth has seen in years.
Across central and western Pennsylvania, observers documented snow geese, Ross’s geese, greater white-fronted geese and even a rare hybrid — species that are either uncommon or typically scarce in the state. The event drew attention from hunters, birders, and wildlife managers alike.

Should hunting, fishing guides be licensed? Legislative debate set to begin again in South Dakota

South Dakota lawmakers will again weigh whether the state should require hunting and fishing guides to be licensed as the state’s annual winter bill-making session is under way.
It’s a debate that’s resurfaced as more and more guides advertise online. Some are leasing exclusive access to prime private acres, increasing hunting pressure elsewhere. Yet, some outfitters and landowners warn that a broad licensing approach could sweep in private arrangements that have little to do with issues of access and crowding.
