Illinois Conservation Foundation honors Steve Sarley as Outdoor Writer of the Year

Steve Sarley, a Wheaton resident who has written a column for Illinois Outdoor News since it launched in 2008, has been honored by the Illinois Conservation Foundation as “Outdoor Writer of the Year.”
The honor, announced in early January, comes as part of the annual Outdoor Excellence Awards, which recognize work “that has strengthened conservation, outdoor recreation, and public access.” The Illinois Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers also was recognized.

Bobcat take starts slow but expected to grow in Illinois

Halfway through the 2026-26 bobcat season, the Illinois DNR has reported the harvest to be “uneventful,” with roughly one-third of the anticipated harvest tagged.
At the Jan. 1 mark, a total of 195 bobcats had been harvested, a number that puts trappers and hunters on pace to match or exceed last season’s record harvest of 649.

Trio pushing Wisconsin NRB, DNR on regulation of wake boats

Natural Resources Board (NRB) members expressed concerns similar to those expressed by citizens that the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is not doing enough to prevent invasive species from spreading to Wisconsin’s waters.
At the board’s Dec. 10, 2025 meeting, members heard from three persistent citizens who have long expressed concerns over the inability of wake boats to eliminate invasive species that remain in ballast tank water when the boats move from lake to lake.

‘Camo at the Capitol’ advocates for crane hunt, Knowles-Nelson in Wisconsin

A motivated legion of 75 outdoorsmen and women clad in camouflage and blaze orange moved methodically through the hallways of the State Capitol on Jan. 7 in Madison to meet with state legislators to voice support for reauthorizing the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Fund and advance the effort to create a sandhill crane season in Wisconsin.
Camo at the Capitol, an effort led by George Ermert, a lobbyist working with Ducks Unlimited (DU), included staff and volunteers from a broad coalition of conservation groups.
