Sandhill crane bill narrowly clears Wisconsin Senate hearing

A proposal to establish a sandhill crane hunting season in Wisconsin moved a couple steps forward recently in the state Senate and Assembly.
On Jan. 6, the Assembly Committee on Sporting Heritage held a public hearing on Assembly Bill 117 that would establish a sandhill crane season. Rep. Treig Pronschinske (R-Mondovi) is chairman of the committee. Rep. Paul Tittl (R-Manitowoc) is vice-chairman.

Whitetail harvest of antlerless deer, mature bucks both jump in latest national deer report

The National Deer Association released its annual deer report on Jan. 15 that takes a close look at nearly everything pertaining to whitetails, including detailed harvest and hunter information, from across the country.
Two things that stood out: whitetail hunters in the U.S. shot more than 3 million antlerless deer for just the third time in 11 years, and the percentage of 3 ½-year-old and older bucks in the antlered buck harvest was the highest ever recorded.

Commentary: Time to remove Minnesota’s ‘aggregate’ bag limit for deer

Many states might have a deer-hunting law or two that leave hunters scratching their heads. But, for the most part, regulations are created for good reasons.
I typically don’t have a problem with Minnesota’s deer-hunting regs, but I came upon one recently that makes little sense and contradicts the messaging hunters hear from DNR deer managers. It’s worth pointing out.

Southern Adirondacks town debates use of ‘ice-eaters’ on lakes

A town in the southern Adirondacks is considering a law that would regulate how property owners on two lakes in town can use “ice eaters” and bubblers to protect docks and shoreline in the winter amid a debate over their impacts.
Safety concerns for those who venture onto the ice of Glen Lake and Lake Sunnyside in the Town of Queensbury prompted the Queensbury Town Board to discuss the issue in late December, urged by residents who are concerned by the open water and unpredictable ice caused by ice prevention devices.

Tyler Frantz: Snow day a welcomed bonus in deer season

School teachers who love to hunt receive the bulk of their vacation days during the wrong time of year. Sure, summers are nice for travel and recalibration, but they pale in comparison to spending time in a deer stand come November and December.
As an elementary STEM teacher by trade, I absolutely love my profession and the difference I get to make in young lives – but the limit of three personal days per school year can seem a bit skimpy when prime hunting opportunities compete with classroom duties.

Steve Pollick: It’s always a good day for a winter hike

It was a foggy, drizzly-smeary kind of day, 50-ish by afternoon, unseasonably mild for the day after Christmas. Perfect time for a winter hike.
Shelly and Mark Goodman, veteran hikers and nature fans from Columbus, Ohio, had laid down an invitation for a no-matter-the-weather hike at the lovely, undulating woodlands of Highbanks Metropark north of the sprawling, noisy metropolis.

Repower your outboard or trolling motor: Here are top options for 2026

If an angler wants a new motor, there are more options than ever, with more colors to match your gelcoat, and lower heartaches at the gas pump. These things sip fuel, don’t require ear plugs to operate, and they require less maintenance than in year’s past.
Repower, or buy a new rig, but the options below won’t disappoint.
