Nature Smart: Meet the amazing junco

There is a small, common bird some describe as “bland” that visits your yard each winter. It is charcoal gray in color with a white belly.
The males are darker than the females. They have a small pink bill, which is really the only splash of color on this bird. They have a pair of white outer tail feathers that stand out strikingly against the dark tail but are only seen when the bird is in flight.

Megan Plete: On a buck’s trail and lessons etched in snow

Tracking a white-tailed buck in the snow looks dreamy in photos.
It has all the elements that make a nostalgic hunting postcard scene: a clean white landscape, hanging branches, and a wool-clad hunter moving like a gentle whisper through fresh powder. My reality was a lot less polished. It was not smooth at all.

Streams of Thought: It’s the little things that add up to a great year

As I set out to write this last-of-the-year column, I figured I’d reminisce. You know, jot down all sorts of landmarks and highlights regarding my outdoors world in 2025, and those of the Minnesota hunting and fishing public, as I saw them.
But, somehow, a group of squirrels and some deer led me elsewhere. Besides, I’m not much in the reminiscing mood. Could be the result of another year wiser and more handsome. Who knows.

Dean Bortz: Wisconsin 21-year-old tags 637-pound bear

Wisconsin’s bear-hunting women had great success during the September/October bear season. Those ladies killed some big bears, including a couple of bruins that topped 500 pounds.
Add Kyler Rundquist, age 21, of Clayton, to that list. The young accountant received some help from her hunting crew and their trailing hounds to bag a Polk County brute with a live weight of 637 pounds and a dressed weight of 569 pounds.

More Sunday hunting may be in store in Pennsylvania

Hunters can expect additional Sundays to be added to the 2026-27 seasons when the Pennsylvania Game Commission board meets on Jan. 30-31.
Currently, an additional 13 Sundays were added via an executive order last fall. Those Sundays concluded on Dec. 7 during the firearms deer season, but there appears to be support to carry it further in 2026.

Pursuit of Cloquet Forestry Center land transfer continues

In late August this year, the University of Minnesota announced it had reached an agreement in principle – a commitment between parties – with the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa regarding the Cloquet Forestry Center.
The agreement would allow the university to continue to operate and maintain the forestry center but transfer ownership of the 3,400 acres the center sits on to the Fond du Lac band.

Spring turkey permit processes indicate no evidence of changes for Illinois’ 2026 season

The application period for the second lottery for Illinois spring season permits is open and runs through Jan. 12. All hunters are eligible to apply for one turkey permit – and hunters who were not successful in the first lottery will receive preference.
