A hunter who did not return to a camp late in Pennsylvania’s deer season was found dead Saturday evening Dec. 13, the Centre County coroner’s office reported.

Illinois DNR law enforcement began investigating the unlawful take of a trumpeter swan that was found deceased near Kinmundy in Marion County on Dec. 5. After x-rays were taken of the deceased swan, it was discovered numerous bb’s were lodged in the bird.

As Illinois wraps up the first year of its 5-year CWD Pilot Program, neighboring states Iowa and Missouri are also altering their management approaches – including how they utilize hunters to help control the disease in their deer herds.
The Illinois plan focuses on surveillance – sampling hunter-harvested deer and suspect deer – and adaptive management, such as sharpshooting infected areas, particularly in northern and west-central Illinois where the disease is endemic.

Here we go again. I recently read an article in one of my hunting magazines titled “Is Long Range Shooting at Animals Ethical Hunting?”
The author claims that unless you’re an excellent marksman who has perfected long-range shooting with the right rifle and sights, you should not take those 1,000 yard shots at any animal. The implication here is that some of us aging hunters – without our new sophisticated firearms and sights – should not take long shots and risk wounding an animal.
