Rare fisher caught on trail camera in Cleveland Metroparks

Biologists at Cleveland Metroparks are excited about the sighting of a rare fisher on a wildlife camera earlier this year.
Fishers are animals in the same family as weasels, mink, martens, and otters, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). WJW TV in Cleveland first reported that Cleveland Metroparks highlighted the new discovery in an Instagram post in early December.

This year’s walleye hatch means more good news for anglers in Western Lake Erie

This summer, perch anglers were inundated with young-of-year walleyes, with many reports of double-digit landings of the aggressive, fast-growing, fingerling fish being caught on perch rigs baited with shiner minnows.
Thus, it was no surprise when the Ohio Lake Erie Fisheries Research Station shared its August trawling observations at the October Ohio Wildlife Council meeting suggesting another “exceptional” walleye hatch occurred this spring in Western Lake Erie.

Ice forming but remains uncertain for Ohio waters of Lake Erie

As of mid-December, there were some locations where anxious ice anglers were walking on Ohio water and pulling fish through their augured or chipped holes.
Near Ohio’s north coast, the Kelleys Island ferry was pushing floes of pancake ice aside as they ran their route in the channel from there and Marblehead.

Ohio gun hunters kill nearly 16,000 deer in bonus weekend

Hunters checked 15,835 white-tailed deer on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 20-21, during Ohio’s gun hunting weekend, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. Last year, hunters took 17,386 deer during the bonus gun weekend, and the three-year average is 16,010.
This season, the Division of Wildlife has increased its efforts to help hunters donate their deer to food pantries.

Flathead stocked in 1998 sampled in Illinois’ Canton Lake

A tagged flathead catfish captured by DNR biologists last year in Canton Lake turned out to be an original fish taken from the Illinois River and stocked in the 250-acre lake in December 1998.
“That would make this fish at least 29 years old – if it was a 2-year-old at stocking,” DNR noted in its most recent report on Canton, one of the top catfish lakes in the state.
