Michigan’s firearms deer harvest declines from 2024

Michigan hunters registered 129,471 whitetails through the DNR’s mandatory online registration system during the 16-day firearms deer season.
That’s down approximately 2.8% from last year’s firearms season harvest. This year’s total includes 81,344 bucks and 48,127 antlerless deer. Hunters registered 38,129 whitetails on opening day.

Two cougars caught together on camera in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

The majority of recent trail camera photos of cougars in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula have been of solitary animals.
But Dayne Pulkas from Trimountain got about a dozen pictures on November 10 of a pair of mountain lions together at one of his deer baits in Ontonagon County. Could they be the cougar kittens seen and photographed in Ontonagon County this spring?

Late-season bird hunting creates enduring memories

The weather provocateurs on the local TV news were giddy with anticipation last week, beating the drums like over-caffeinated jazz percussionists about the prospects of a second snowstorm in roughly a week.
A “long-duration winter system” had begun to settle in southern Minnesota, a wintry event that would eventually move north into the Twin Cities, ushering in periods of heavy snow, blustery winds, and “the coldest air of the season.”

Ryan Rothstein: Why I switched to copper (and steel) ammunition

I remember the first time I saw the imaging from a study investigating lead fragmentation on shot game.
The area of impact was obvious on the gray and blue slide, a neat bullet hole where the round had landed. There were clearly small lead fragments around this wound channel, but what really caught my eye were the glowing white dots scattered throughout the carcass. Each of those neon specks were fragments of lead that the bullet had shed upon impact with the carcass.

2025 a big year for lake sturgeon releases in Ohio waters

Reintroduction efforts for state-endangered lake sturgeon expanded to the Cuyahoga, Sandusky, and Scioto rivers in 2025, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.
As part of a large, regional partnership, the 6- to 8-inch-long juvenile sturgeon were released in the Cuyahoga, Sandusky, and Scioto rivers for the first time, as well as in the Maumee River as part of ongoing restoration efforts.
