Glenn Sapir: Memories from a hunter’s 65 straight years tagging a buck

Winning streaks in sports are always exciting to witness.
When they come to an end, fans root for the next, even longer streak. One record streak, in baseball, that most believe will never be topped is Joe DiMaggio’s 56-consecutive-game hit streak. Another seemingly unbeatable streak, during which I witnessed many of the successes, is my good friend John Miller’s 65 consecutive years of harvesting at least one buck.

Streams of Thought: Minnesota deer kill numbers have always made headlines, even in D.C.

Until there’s just a bit more finality regarding the results of Minnesota’s 2025 deer-hunting seasons, let’s for now settle for a brief update.
As of earlier this week, with a “CWD hunt” on tap, a portion of the muzzleloader season remaining, and the archery season continuing until year’s end, the deer harvest had pushed past 177,000 – about 7,000 dead animals greater than last year’s take.

What can Minnesota trappers expect with bobcat, marten, fisher seasons soon to begin?

In what Bert Highland, Minnesota Trappers Association vice president, describes as the heart of pine marten territory around Brimson, he anticipates a decent trapping season ahead.
The pine marten-trapping season, along with that for fishers and bobcats, begins Dec. 13 in Minnesota’s northern furbearer zone; they begin Jan. 6 in the southern furbearer zone, pine martens not included.

Christine Thomas: Fall is a time of ups and downs at the little cabin

This has not been a normal fall at the little cabin. Our Airedale, Major, has had another round of significant health issues.
At 10-1⁄2 years of age, anything can happen, as dog people know. In mid-October, Major suddenly began shrieking, and I do mean shrieking, in pain whenever he tried to lie down. This became constant crying, whining, and panting. He was carrying his left hind leg.

Gretchen Steele: Why every hunter should keep a field journal

Scoot a little closer to the fire, friends. I want to talk about a tool most of us already have rattling around in a truck console, tucked in a blind bag, or forgotten in a coat pocket. Not a knife or a compass or a fancy GPS unit.
I’m talking about the humble field journal – that little notebook that, if you let it, becomes your most faithful hunting partner.
