Prime time arrives with Wisconsin’s gun deer opener

Based on the later timing of the gun season opener and the preliminary results of the early archery deer season kill, Wisconsin’s gun deer hunters can probably expect a gun deer season similar to 2024.
The Saturday, Nov. 22, opener may not be the latest possible start date for the gun deer season, but rubs right up against it, so while it’s still possible to see some rutting activity that could put deer in the crosshairs during daylight hours, hunters can’t rely on rut action to produce deer movement.

South Dakota doesn’t disappoint for an autumn cast and blast

Brilliant sunlight illuminated the horizon as I pulled my cell phone out of a jacket pocket to check the time.
“Legal shooting time,” I uttered to my buddy, Mike, lying in a makeshift layout blind nearby. Almost on cue, a flock of mallards buzzed over our decoy spread and banked hard to the left. A frigid blustery northwest wind on their tail feathers propelled them forward at breakneck speed.

Memories from a ‘wannabe duck hunter’

While rearranging tools and lawn-care gear in our backyard shed last week, I paused to inspect the duck and goose decoys stacked high and wide along the shed’s south wall.
My hand-crafted decoys aren’t works of art, and I doubt they’d sell for much if dumped at a garage sale. Still, I built 99% of them back in the early 1980s, a time when I counted down the days until duck season with the same zeal I still have for deer season.

Dumpsters aim to help prevent CWD spread in three Wisconsin counties

Thanks to the effort of a local sportsmen’s club, hunters in three northeastern Wisconsin counties have a place to dispose of deer carcasses aimed at keeping chronic wasting disease (CWD) in check.
Since 2019, the Oconto County Sportsmen’s Alliance has provided deer carcass dumpsters. This year, seven dumpsters are located in Oconto County, two in Marinette County and one in Shawano County. Alliance President Gary Lemmen said there are two main reasons behind the effort.

Use water to maximize your hunting success this whitetail season

Water can be a hindrance when trying to get to a good hunting spot. It can also be the key to success. Sometimes it’s both on the same day.
Mucky swamps, marshes, bogs and fens, cool trout streams and ponds, and lakes of every variety all influence deer behavior and movement, and they can provide an often-overlooked access route for hunters.

Dan Ladd: What’s the deal with trail cameras on New York state lands?

Hunters reading the New York 2025-26 Hunting & Trapping Regulations Guide made an interesting discovery that had not been in previously printed editions of DEC’s annual publication.
On pages 18 and 19 it says it is unlawful to leave personal property, including trail cameras stored on state lands. This is mentioned under both State Forests and Wildlife Management Areas. As for the Adirondack and Catskill State Forest Preserves, the guide states that all state land rules and regulations apply to these public land tracts as well.

Nature Smart: The all-American bison should be celebrated

The American bison (Bison bison) strikes me as one of those animals that doesn’t get the admiration or respect that other large animals command.
The public adores brown bears, moose, and elk. Hunters prize white-tailed deer. Even black bears get a little love. Yet it seems everyone just tolerates bison, kind of like you might tolerate a strange uncle who comes to a family gathering.
