Nature Smart: The all-American bison should be celebrated

The largest native land animal on the continent, the American bison nearly went extinct in the late 1800s. Today there are hundreds of thousands in commercial herds and about 20,000 range in wild herds bison across the country. (Photo by Stan Tekiela)

The American bison (Bison bison) strikes me as one of those animals that doesn’t get the admiration or respect that other large animals command.
The public adores brown bears, moose, and elk. Hunters prize white-tailed deer. Even black bears get a little love. Yet it seems everyone just tolerates bison, kind of like you might tolerate a strange uncle who comes to a family gathering.
