Review of WMA timber harvest in Minnesota highlights lack of plans, USFWS and DNR employee concerns

A Minnesota Office of the Legislative Auditor special review of the Minnesota DNR’s harvest of timber on state wildlife management areas became available Tuesday. It offers recommendations for the DNR regarding the state’s 1.3 million acres of WMAs, addressing agency wildlife manager concerns and DNR leadership actions that two years ago led to the suspension of federal funding to the state.
The review also includes responses from DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen regarding the OLA’s many recommendations.

Iowa pheasant hunters eagerly await an Oct. 25 opener with high expectations

The phone calls began as soon as Iowa’s annual pheasant survey hit the internet. Hunters from across the state and the Midwest wanted to know, “Where’s the best place to hunt?” and “What do you expect hunting pressure to be?”
When you’re the one coordinating the survey and the numbers come in at the highest level in a generation, that’s to be expected.

Striped bass remain focus at Cedar Lake in Illinois’ Jackson County

Curious anglers are eager to see what DNR has learned from a striped bass tagging program that was initiated at Cedar Lake in 2023.
The 1,750-acre water in deep southern Illinois has long been one of the top – if not the top – striper lakes in the state, with 20-pound fish reported by anglers over the past decade.
