Scott Croft retires from BoatUS after 23 years

Those who have heard about the Boat Owners Association of The United States – simply referred to as BoatUS – likely did so because of work performed by Scott Croft in the last 23 years of his employment as the Public Relations guru for the organization.
That journey came to an end on Sept. 30 when Croft headed into retirement and began a new chapter in his life.

Patrick Durkin: Low fall drowning rates doesn’t mean safe hunting, fishing

Only two of Wisconsin’s nearly 19 boating-related deaths each year happen between October and December, but that doesn’t mean autumn is a safe time on the water for anglers and waterfowlers.
Water temperatures steadily decline after Labor Day, which means hypothermia can quickly kill those falling from a boat or filling their chest waders far from dry ground. Plus, waterfowlers often navigate boats in darkness, increasing their risks of striking unseen logs, stumps or exposed rocks.

Want to try winter camping? Here’s the must-have gear and knowledge to make it a great experience

Outdoor users in Minnesota may know Blane Klemek as the northwest region wildlife manager with the state’s Department of Natural Resources.

That job with an emphasis on wildlife and the outdoors certainly fits with how Klemek lives his life. He’s a passionate adventurer focused on fishing, hunting, and camping. For 25 years he has gone on winter camping trips, usually with about five other friends in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of northern Minnesota.
“Sometimes it can be an absolute challenge with cold temperatures and snowfall,” Klemek said. “But with experienced people, many hands make light work.”

Archers take pair of 500-pound central Wisconsin bears

Two Wisconsin bowhunters scored on trophy central Wisconsin black bears to kick off the 2025 season, both in the 500-pound live weight range and in the mid-400 pounds field dressed.
One of the bears came from Marathon County, while the other was shot in Wood County. Jesse Call, of Athens, has been bear hunting since 2017, all in Zone C.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: Poaching is a big problem, and it’s on all of us to tackle the issue

Last month, local news outlets reported on a Wyoming County man who pleaded guilty for numerous deer poaching incidents in Genesee and Wyoming counties, ending a nearly two-year investigation.
Tyler Jennings of Attica, N.Y., was required to pay $6,000 in fines and $750 in court surcharges. The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation also revoked Jennings’ hunting privileges for five years. The time spent and resources used to nail this game law violator were extensive.

Commentary: A look at New York’s three-county 500-foot crossbow set-back rule

A recent article and an editorial in the Sept. 19 New York Outdoor News edition regarding the new crossbow law pointed out the 500-foot setback for Suffolk and Westchester counties (the law also includes Nassau) reduces the possibility of crossbow hunting on private land compared to the prior crossbow rule of 250 feet.
It needs to be understood that the original version of the law, if passed, would have resulted in a 150-foot setback like the other bow categories. However, the 250-foot restriction remained in the filed bill.
