Steve Carney: Take time to learn a new deer hunting property

As a bowhunter, I’m always on the prowl for new bowhunting locations. It’s like sales: Always be closing. I recently scored a new spot at a landscaping business that has had problems with deer damaging young trees and shrubs. I happily volunteered to help out.
It’s funny. I was buying a few trees for replanting and just happened to ask for permission to hunt, and we worked it out. I’m excited, but you never know what you’re getting into on a new property.

Wisconsin DNR forester killed by lightning strike remembered as family man, avid outdoorsman

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Senior Forester Adam Zirbel died Sept. 22 after being struck by lightning in the Kettle Moraine State Forest Northern Unit east of Kewaskum. Zirbel worked out of the DNR’s Plymouth Office.
On Sept. 22, Zirbel, 48, was working near the New Fane Trail Area in the state forest. DNR Warden Supervisor Juan Gomez was a friend and coworker of Zirbel at the Plymouth DNR office.

Former National Park Service supervisors say to close parks if government shutdown comes

A group of former national park superintendents early this week was calling on the Trump administration to close the parks to visitors in case of a government shutdown.
Past shutdowns in which parks remained open led to vandalism of iconic symbols, destroyed wildlife habitat, and endangered visitors, 40 former superintendents said in a letter to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum.

Minnesota Mixed Bag: Keep It Clean Program now accepting grant applications

The Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources is now accepting grant applications for the Keep it Clean Program, a new initiative that aims to protect Minnesota’s lakes by preventing water pollution from garbage and other waste left on the ice of state waters during winter use activities such as ice fishing.

Commentary: Americans loudly tell the Forest Service to not rescind the ‘Roadless Rule’

The 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule, which currently protects over 58.8 million acres of national forest land from road-building, logging, and other industrial activity, represents one of the most significant protections for wildlife habitat in the United States. Despite the long-standing success of the rule in protecting our forests while allowing for active fire management, the Trump administration announced in June that it plans to repeal the rule. Public comments collected by the government regarding the rule, however, demonstrate an overwhelming rejection of this plan.

Hunt with close calls ends with a filled tag for Afton man during Minnesota’s opening elk season

With only four tags up for grabs for about 4,000 state elk hunters who applied, Afton resident George Clements, who was successful in the draw, knew it was a special opportunity to hunt the big-game species in Minnesota.
“I didn’t know about elk hunting in Minnesota until about five years ago, and then I started applying,” Clements said.
