Study of Minnesota’s Leech Lake muskies: All about movement in year one, with mortality data to come

Growing up in the area and fishing Leech Lake, especially for muskies, it was a no-brainer for Baylor Short to tackle a Leech Lake muskie study coordinated by MN-Fish, the Minnesota DNR, and Bemidji State University.
“It’s nice to be working with the species I enjoy fishing for,” said Short, fisheries specialist for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe and a BSU grad student leading the field work.
The study is well under way this summer, as Short has traversed the lake while dropping receivers and tracking tagged muskies, via boat, to better understand habitat use, how far the fish are moving, and to gauge mortality.

Michigan DNR researchers to test trail cameras in elk survey

Researchers from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources will pilot the use of trail cameras to estimate the state’s elk population as part of a larger research project aimed at determining the most accurate and cost-effective way to manage the elk herd.
The DNR’s Wildlife Division recently set up about 200 cameras in and around the core elk range, which encompasses some 1,100 square miles across northern Lower Michigan.

Spring Run complex caters to birders, hunters in the heart of the Iowa Great Lakes

Spring Run is one of the largest, most diverse complexes in Iowa, stretching from Hwy. 9 to the north to Lower Gar Lake to the southwest. The popular public wildlife area follows along almost the entirety of East Okoboji Lake.
Covering roughly 5,000 acres, the Spring Run complex was dedicated as Iowa’s second Bird Conservation Area in 2002, supporting less common bird species, including marsh wrens, black terns, American bitterns, dickcissels, grasshopper sparrows, bobolinks, northern harriers, upland sandpipers, trumpeter swans, and, most recently, nesting sandhill cranes.

Steve Pollick: Backyard archery range about to get real busy

Hard to believe that it’s “that time” again. Time for old-fashioned archers to get tuned up for deer hunting season.
We are the holdovers, traditionalists, who shoot barebows – longbows, recurves, no sights. We are not elitists, but maybe throwbacks. But we’re stubborn about using our more primitive gear, gear that relies on muscle memory, hand-eye coordination, and practice, practice, practice.

Researchers discover 62-year-old ‘Mary Catherine’ — the oldest known lake trout in the Great Lakes

The oldest known lake trout in the Great Lakes, 62 years old at the time of capture, recently was documented by researchers at the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Marquette Fisheries Research Station.
This fish was collected from Klondike Reef in Lake Superior in the fall of 2023 by a team of intrepid researchers from the DNR, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Purdue University.
