Illinois DNR ‘open to the conversation’ of having some state sites converted to national parks

The Illinois Legislative Audit Commission in late May held a hearing to discuss a recent Auditor General finding that wasn’t flattering to DNR and its management of state historic sites.
An interesting aside to the audit hearing were hints by DNR Director Natalie Phelps Finnie that the state may be willing to have some state sites converted to national parks. The topic was brought up in a question by State Rep. Charlie Meier, R-Okawville.

Upsala 15-year-old takes high gun to jumpstart huge Minnesota trapshooting event

Braxton Ailie did not have the best feeling as he envisioned how his rounds might go on the first day of the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League’s 2025 Trap Shooting Championship in Alexandria.
Ailie said when the weather cooperates, he typically expects good scores to follow. Gusting winds can throw a wrench into those plans, and that’s what shooters faced on Monday – opening day of this nine-day trap shoot dubbed as the world’s largest shooting event.
“With the weather today I thought it was going to be horrible,” Ailie said, “but I ended up shooting a 24 the first round and then 25.”

Bill Hilts, Jr.: Reflecting on another successful year around the sun

“Congratulations on making it another year around the sun!”
Those were the words of Mike Waterhouse, former Lake Ontario charter captain and fish promotion expert for Orleans County, N.Y., before he retired to South Carolina a few years ago. Yes, I turned 69 years of age in early June, and it didn’t seem like another year had gone by already. I couldn’t believe I was 69.

Summer food plot maintenance: Lime, fertilizer, mowing and more

As spring rains soak the landscape, many perennial food plots produce large amounts of nutritious deer foods. But as desirable food plot species like clover and alfalfa grow, so too does undesirable weeds and grasses.
It’s inevitable that some unwanted weeds and grasses are going to find their way into your food plot. Instead of driving yourself crazy trying to eliminate every single one, use these strategies to minimize their impact and maximize your plot’s health.

Dan Ladd: Some good news on New York’s fishing front

The state’s May 30 announcement that $100 million is headed for fish hatchery improvements, and even a hatchery replacement in Randolph, is fantastic news for New York anglers.
It’s also the realization of the promise of the 2022 Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act, which was approved that year by New York voters. As DEC notes, fish hatcheries contribute up to $5 billion in economic benefits annually. Some facilities, however, are in better shape than others and this “modernization” initiative will surely help address that.

Creel surveys show bass on New York’s Lake Champlain remain the most targeted species

Black bass were the most targeted fish species among Lake Champlain anglers in 2024, though some anglers reported concerns about lower bass catch rates in recent years.
That was among the conclusions from a four-year creel survey performed on New York’s Lake Champlain, details of which were released earlier this spring during the annual “state of the fishery” meeting held for Champlain.
