Minnesota’s omnibus environment bill headed to Gov. Walz

Minnesota’s 2025 legislative session has officially ended after a one-day special session on Monday, June 9, when the House and Senate focused on passing bills for Gov. Tim Walz’s signature.
Among the first omnibus packages to pass the Senate, then a few hours later in the House of Representatives, was the environment and natural resources bill – SF 3. The Senate voted 38-29 in favor and House voted 105-26 in favor of it.

Illinois Mixed Bag: Pekin High School wins Bob Kerans Muskie Tournament

Pekin High School Teams 1 and 2 won the 12th annual Illinois Bob Kerans Scholastic Muskie Tournament held on Johnson Lake in Banner Marsh on May 31.
Wyatt Weidner and Chris Gilbert from Pekin High School Team 1 took first and big fish when Wyatt caught a 38.5-inch muskie trolling at 10:35 a.m.

World Shooting Complex in Illinois will be able to hire scorekeepers as young as 14 for Grand Championships

A measure that allows the World Shooting Complex to hire people as young as 14 to keep score at the Grand American World Trapshooting Championships passed the Illinois General Assembly May 29 and will be sent to the governor for his signature.
Gov. JB Pritzker is expected to sign the bill soon, allowing the state to hire a roster of scorekeepers in advance of this summer’s Grand American.

Bill to help Illinois farmers control deer awaits governor’s signature

Legislation aimed at making it easier for residents to obtain a hunting permit — and to help control the deer population — passed both the Illinois Senate and House, and is headed toward the governor’s desk.
On May 30, as the General Assembly’s spring session drew near a close, Senate Bill 710 passed the House by a unanimous 115-0 vote. Under the measure, DNR will implement new rules for the Deer Removal Permit.

Right on schedule, black bear wanders in – then out of Illinois

Illinois DNR made an educated guess about a guest, and that guess turned to reality when the guest did what the guess said it would do.
DNR did not predict the part about the bee hive, though. A black bear was confirmed in southern Illinois in late May, months after DNR had warned state residents that visits by black bears should be treated with diligence and safety.
